I had a Samsung receiver recently crap out on me, and I'm looking to replace it. I currently have a 7.1 setup in the house, and I have a media computer, U-Verse box, and PS3 that all connect with HDMI. I also have a NES, SNES, N64, and Wii that I would prefer to keep connected, so I need something with a multitude of RCA connections. Ideally, I want to have something that can convert all of those signals and transfer them over a single HDMI cable to the computer.
I play video games on the PS3 with a headset at night if my wife's asleep, so it would be nice to have a receiver that can pass through HDMI even when the receiver is in standby.
I've heard a lot of good things from Onkyo owners, but the people I know that own Onkyo equipment have nothing that can push 1080P, let alone multiple devices that would require switching. I want to set up my receiver so that it is capable of controlling everything, so that I don't ever have to use the TV remote. My previous receiver got glitchy trying to switch HDMI signals when I went from a TV signal to a video game signal, and that was incredibly annoying. I'd have to turn off everything and then cycle them back on to correct the issue. I'd be willing to pay extra for a receiver that eliminated this problem.
What brands should I check out and which ones should I steer clear of? What benefits do 7.2 have over 7.1? Any particular models that anyone have that you don't have HDMI switching issues with? 10/25/2010 11:01:33 AM |

My Onkyo does 1080p HDMI switching just fine. Never had any glitches or anything like that. It also does 1080i upconversion over HDMI from any other video source so I only need to run one cable from the receiver to the TV and everything else plugs into the receiver. I have the tx-sr607, but I know they've came out with at least the 608 since then. 10/25/2010 1:42:32 PM |

The Onkyo SR-608 appears to be about the same price as the Yamaha. Is there much difference in build quality between the two brands at that price range?
I have an XM subscription, and the Onkyo lists that they are Sirius ready. I know the two companies merged, but can I use an XM radio subscription to activate a Sirius radio? 10/25/2010 2:01:35 PM |
