How is this done? I was looking at changing to verizon but their tethering is 20 extra dollars/month which i now realize is normal.

Yes but it will still count toward your data usage if your data plan isn't unlimited and the free options for jailbroken tethering require some tinkering with settings each time you want to tether, for it to be as seamless as the built in iOS tethering you need to buy a $20 app from Cydia. I wouldn't even really mind paying the monthly fee to AT&T (that's a lie, I'd mind on principle alone but I'd still pay it) if they would let me keep my unlimited data plan but making any changes to your data plan now, including adding tethering, switches you to one of the capped plans and you can never get the unlimited plan back. For that reason alone I will never tether on a non-jailbroken iPhone.
