A coworker is taking pictures at our school's athletic events, and wants to sell the digital copies to parents for a tiny bit of money (like $.25 to $1) to support a photography club.

I have no experience selling pictures. I've interacted with Brightroom after running in race, and it stunk. Is there something simpler out there?

A friend of mine used to use http://www.smugmug.com

No clue about level of quality there though. Just throwing it out.

our wedding photographers used pictage, but pictage's prices are ridiculous (like $3 per 4x6 print, though they give you a crazy awesome DEAL at 2-for-1!)

Only place that I've used where $0.25-1.00 would be doable was artscow.com. It takes a while to get the photos but they're not too bad for snapshots. I definitely wouldn't send them anything I actually care about though.

Smugmug is the straight Cadillac of selling photos, but not for a dollar. They'll print them and ship them straight to your client, you just put your prices above their price (I think it starts at like 1.25 including shipping.)

It sounds like you just need a simple website where you can take a dollar through paypal and send them a digital file via email. You can use fir4j to render out low quality with watermarks quickly. And I'm betting your volume will be so low you can just do it all by hand. If you don't want to do it by hand joomla and drupal have excellent tools to automate this process and just email you when cash hits your account.
