only problem is the "visor".. which will most likey break, probably in the box as its being shipped.

hah.

ive had mine, bell mag4, for a few years. i love it.

btw, you got a SA2010 for $150? the 2005s are around that much. heck of a deal if ya did.

I have an old "visor" open face helmet for auto-xes (that I haven't been to in like 5 years, anybody got one coming up? LETS DO IT) and karting. I don't think the visor's going anywhere however I would not -as I've told Duke- use an open face helmet for car events. I like my teeth and nose where they are. Some people argue otherwise and even go further suggesting that open face helmets are preferable for driving a car, as airbags may push the helmets up. I wear a neck brace also, and I'd rather walk out of a car w/my beautiful face looking pretty w/out airbag burn, personally.

OK onto motorcycle vs. car helmets, I've found that certain molds look identical b/w the motorcycle vs. SA rated helmets. I bought one such helmet w/an SA rating, which I would ride a motorcycle with. It's got a DOT sticker as well.

Dub, I don't think what I'm saying is in disagreement w/what you're saying.

Even though I was shopping for field of vision + low weight for my SA helmet, the M rated open face helmet has significantly better field of vision. Major difference in karting, but situational awareness + mirrors have allowed the comparatively poor SA helmet to do fine in cars. Mine's an SA 2010, upgraded from my SA 2000 helmet on the last day I could use it. If I remember correctly it was still worth something.

Side note, I wanted to stay under $400 or so, there's some really cool helmets with both lower weight and better field of vision if you're willing to spend around $500.

Sort of. Snell-rated motorcycle helmets undergo a 2-hit test...it's probably just different from the SA test.

That's actually a point of contention in the motorcycling world--the argument is that a helmet stiff and tough enough to pass the 2-hit Snell test is less compliant than optimal for most street motorcycle crashes, thereby txfering more energy/impulse to your head than is really necessary.

My personal take, after reading some on the subject, is that a DOT (non-Snell) helmet is generally what I want on the street, whereas a Snell-rated helmet is what I'd want on the track. I have one of each (and do most of my day-to-day riding in a flip-up style DOT helmet).

There are a bunch of track-day special kit cars (some bike engined, some 4cyl auto engined) all over Europe, it appears, but I can't seem to find many in the States.

Not gonna get anything until at LEAST the summer...just looking around at stuff.

Dont do it.

Keep your car. Run it up to instructor level and call it a day. You're racing wheel to wheel without all that bank.

I'm not looking to race wheel-to-wheel, at least in the foreseeable future. I just think, for several reasons, I'd be happier with a true "toy" car and a much more pedestrian DD.

Well yeah, I'm fine with buying a racecar, be it a tube-framed pure racer, or a stripped-out converted street car for some SCCA class. I don't currently have any plans to race it, though. If I wanted to do that, I'd get a Formula Vee or Spec Miata.

Dad is doing the Richard Petty Driving Experience at Charlotte on the 19th of March. They're doing some deal where if one person signs up, a 2nd person is 1/2 price...so I'm gonna go do the one where you drive 8 laps around Charlotte Motor Speedway...I think it'll be about $250.

Incidentally, that weekend is also a Turn 1 weekend at CMP, so my plan is to drive separately from Dad, then leave Charlotte on Saturday afternoon and head down to CMP to track the Z06 on Sunday.

post up more helmet deals if anyone runs across any. now that my car is caged, i'm even less comfortable with my current M helmet and on the lookout for an SA at a reasonable price ($200ish or less). still debating on full/open face. airbags aren't a concern.

duke, is the helmet you got offered in black?

^^^^ Yeah, they make it in black. There are 3-4 different open-face SA2010 helmets on the market for $150ish. They all look pretty similar. I liked one of them marginally better than the others, but it got backordered for, like, a month...so I cnx that order and got the Pyrotect.

Still planning on Turn 1 at CMP on Sunday. Hopefully the wx holds out.

Do R-comps hold up better to track usage than tires like my Nittos, or PS2s, or Azenis, or Star-Specs, or other tires of that type? Obviously the treadwear rating is significantly less, but I'm wondering if the R-comps cope with the heat and stuff better so as to wear the same or better than aggressive street tires?

How much better would R-comps be than my Nitto NT05s?

I guess what I'm getting at, is...is it worth getting a 2nd set of wheels with R-comps for the track, and then keeping something a rung or two down the performance ladder on my street wheels? Or is that a good chunk of money and some extra trouble for not many advantages over just running aggressive street tires for both street and track?

R comps are primarily for increased grip, I wouldn't recommend them for a beginner. If you have Ultra High Performance or Max Performance tires and you don't think you could get at least a few events out of a set, you're probably over driving them. Easy to do w/an immensely capable car.

In other news, I'll be at turn one as well!

Yeah, my NT05s have 2 days at CMP (though one of those days was my first time on track, without any of the driving aids working, and in the rain...so I wasn't pushing them that hard) on them and another couple thousand-ish miles of road driving. They're almost down to the wear bars towards the middle. I don't think there's any way they'll have (legal) tread left after this weekend (driving to GA and back and hitting CMP on Sunday).

$800 worth of tires/mounting every other month is going to get expensive quickly, haha.

The extra grip of R-comps would be nice (though the breakaway characteristics might not be...although I guess stability control would mitigate that some). I wouldn't want to chew completely through a set in a day or two, though. I was thinking of it as a win-win in terms of getting killer track tires, while allowing me to run much harder compound, longer-lasting tires for normal street driving. The only drawback would be the cost of a 2nd set of wheels. That's not an insignificant amount of money, though...don't know if it would be worth it.

Also still trying to decide whether to keep the Z06 for double-duty, or get something more pedestrian + a dedicated track-only car.

just for some perspective, CMP has probably the most aggressive wearing surface on the east coast besides jennings gp which is bike only. I don't think you'll normally go through tires that fast. for the same track time i get about 2x the mileage at lesser tracks like vir patriot and beaverun and 3x the mileage at vir full and njmp

VIR full is not a lesser track!1 and VIR-Patriot is not a track...

CMP used to be much harder on tires, though it's still fairly abrasive.

Anyway, as for the R comps; their primary purpose is not to last longer but provide much more grip and better feedback. The compound is meant to handle much higher temperatures than regular street tires. They very well may last longer with your current driving on track, but that just means you're over driving the tires that are on the car. Final bit of note is that tires that are shaved or heat cycled tend to last longer than full thread, as you get far less squirm. Also, the last 3-4/32nds should last much longer than the first 3-4/32nds of a street tire under aggressive driving...

And as far as the cost of another set of wheels, since you can get that money back when you sell the wheels, I only see it as a temporary parking of money, not as a regular "expense" like tires which you won't see again...

^used up R comps are still better, in my experience, than your average all season tires for autoxing. Job well done!

Duke, does the Z06 have aggressive alignment settings or something? Or do you do burnouts on a weekly basis? The tires I currently have on my car (star specs) probably have around 70% of their tread left and they've been on the car for 6,000 miles and 2 full track days at CMP.

I know we're comparing a Z06 to a S2000, but I recall you went through tires on the S2000 with a quickness as well. Easily twice as fast as me.

I never do burnouts or anything, so it's not that. The Z06 has more aggressive alignment specs than a standard C5, I believe, but I'm on factory specs--nothing extreme (same with S2000). I'm pretty sure it's just me. My front brakes are pretty much toast, too, and they're only maybe 6 weeks old (with 3 days at CMP, but one of them being in the rain).

^^After 2 days at CMP my front track pads were toast (before that event they were about 75%). CMP is hard on brakes if you push it hard. If I recall correctly I braked from over 100 to 30-50 mph 3 times a lap. I dunno what to say about the tires though. CMP wasn't too rough on my tires.

Removing a braking zone (lift before kink instead of braking @CMP for example) will quite significantly lengthen brake life and lower overall temperatures. You're letting them cool for the entire straight before a hard braking zone instead of putting heat back into them in the middle of that straight. CMP is still somewhat hard on brakes, but nothing like it used to be.

As for tire wear, Duke's a decent driver and the Corvette really doesn't seem to mind a few degrees of slip angle under acceleration, so...

That said, I get terrible mileage out of every set of tires on every car as well. The inherent suspension set up/design is a secondary factor for wear, how it's driven is far more important.
