Quote :
"Elsener, through his company Victorinox, managed to corner the market until 1893, when the second industrial cutler of Switzerland, Paul Boéchat & Cie, headquartered in Delémont in the French-speaking region of Jura, started selling a similar product. This company was later acquired by its then General Manager, Theodore Wenger, and renamed the Wenger Company. In 1908 the Swiss government, wanting to prevent an issue over regional favouritism, but perhaps wanting a bit of competition in hopes of lowering prices, split the contract with Victorinox and Wenger, each getting half of the orders placed. By mutual agreement, Wenger advertises as the Genuine Swiss Army Knife and Victorinox uses the slogan the Original Swiss Army Knife.

On April 26, 2005 Victorinox acquired Wenger, becoming once again the sole supplier of knives to the Swiss Army. Victorinox has stated that it intends to keep both consumer brands intact."

no reason in particular for posting this, save that a lot of people don't know the history or difference between the two companies

not that i recall anyone arguing about the two in this thread, but i think wenger is like toyota and victorinox is like lexus...i have a wenger watch that was my daily driver for more than 10 years during middle and high school and it's been great...it wasn't expensive and it looked nice at the time

Yeah I have an older Wenger. Definitely not as nice as my Victorinox. I love the sapphire crystal on the Victorinox's. Not a single scratch.

Thanks man. I actually bought it a few months ago as a reward for reaching a personal goal, but I left it boxed up until I reached the goal. It's actually last year's model, but as far as I can tell the only change is that the hands on the newest version are a little wider. I wasn't planning to buy it early, but I ran across it for almost 50% off the retail price and figured it was worthwhile to buy it and stuff it in the back of the closet until the time was right.

This is the latest:

are there any places that carry vintage watches around here? or where is the best place to go for watches in general, I'd love to get a vintage Seiko or maybe a new chrono or dive watch.

I don't think any around here are going to be that great, you'll just have to visit a lot before you find anything worthwhile.

I really can't think of anyone locally who deals in vintage watches. Your best bet might be trying to find a reputable dealer online.

This is my most recent watch purchase for daily use. For something ~$200 you can't beat it. Nothing wrong with owning a few $1500 dollar watches but there is no reason to wear one on a daily basis.

if you drop a lot of coin on a watch with all kinds of cool features, why would you wear a shitty steel watch that's only redeeming feature might be looking half decent? they make bracelets if you only care for form

Posted the post below in the Chit Chat thread:

Reposting here to get a variety of opinions.

For those who have the Seiko 5 with fabric band or are interested in getting one

[Make sure you see the 'mystery' model at the bottom]

I just ordered one, albeit for GBP 54, as that's the cheapest I could get it for, for delivery to the UK.

Anyway, after placing my order, I discover that there is at least one other variation of the model.

Here is the original, that I just ordered (I got green), same as the amazon one linked on the previous page (on left below)
Green: http://www.creationwatches.com/products/seiko-automatic-sports-89/seiko-5-military-automatic-nylon-mens-watch-snk805k2-snk805-1716.html
Blue: http://www.creationwatches.com/products/seiko-automatic-sports-89/seiko-5-military-automatic-nylon-mens-watch-snk807k2-snk807-1712.html

Here is a slightly different looking one, with 23 jewels instead of 21 (on right below)
Green: http://www.creationwatches.com/products/seiko-automatic-watches-69/seiko-5-military-automatic-sports-snzg09k1-snzg09-snzg09k-men-s-watch-3004.html
Blue: http://www.creationwatches.com/products/seiko-automatic-sports-89/seiko-5-sports-automatic-snzg11k1-snzg11-snzg11k-mens-watch-2885.html

Which one do you guys prefer? I am kind of torn, and I am wondering if I got the 'right' one... sometimes I like the look of the original one, seconds later, I like the newer one. I must say, though, I prefer the positioning of the numbers around the dial on the original one, and it looks more unique that way. Pics of green ones below, click above to see blue.

....OR....

Then there is a solar model, also with a green fabric strap, but a black dial:
http://www.amazon.com/Stainless-Steel-Solar-Quartz-Black/dp/B004KSDHKS

And then there is this Seiko 5, also with green strap and green dial, but with a sports watch design:
http://www.amazon.com/Stainless-Steel-Seiko-Automatic-Green/dp/B00629UOOK/

Finally, there is this 'mystery' model, which looks identical to the original amazon one from the previous page, even has the same model number, and says it will be released in March 2012.
http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-Mens-SNK805-Automatic-Watch/dp/B006CHMRAG
Looking at the dimensions, it is significantly smaller: 31.4 mm wide vs 37 mm, and 7.3 mm thick vs 11 mm for the original. But it says it is men's. So does anybody know how this model is different from the original, other than size? Isn't that too small for a 'typical' men's watch?

mine came in yesterday, and while I like the watch, the face seems a bit small, so if the newer one is smaller, it's gonna be too small.

I prefer a smaller one. (which is why i tend to steer towards used/vintage)

I like these Seikos. Might make a nice cheap beater for casual use. They remind me of Hamilton Feild watches.

...I'm about ready for a new 'baby' - - but when you work in them, daily - you tend to get psycho picky (and usually end up choosing one off a minor detail).

Let the pondering begin...... ;-/

Three watches for 2 different functions, but I can't decide between these

Though, I could buy one of the first 2 and one of these

http://www.creationwatches.com/products/seiko-automatic-watches-69/seiko-5-automatic-snk809k1-snk809k-snk809-21-jewel-men-s-watch-1905.html

The militarys would end up with a Nato, probably.

Dang...

I like the black dial leather band watch and then the Seiko (its very modern and minimal feeling compared to the Hamilton)

I feel that silver face watch looks so generic

But, I have to point out that the silver dial and the black are the same watches.

I would probably buy that if I didn't already have a Seiko Orange Monster Diver that serves the same purpose. <3 the Monster Diver and don't need two watches with a rubber strap.

FUCK

I AM HOOKED (esp to mechanical watches)

Just received together:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000LTAY1U/

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001EWEQ8A/

Click for hi res images if you want.

Funnily enough, I only just came to know of the Orient brand, like 2 days before ordering. It has a 40 hour power reserve. The annoying thing about the Seiko is that it only has a 8-10 hour power reserve.

Don't manufacturers know that people sleep at night? A 12 hour reserve should be a self-imposed mandatory minimum. Ideally 18-24 hours.

Any opinion on following automatics:

Bulova (nice classy looks with partial skeleton)
Kenneth Cole (gorgeous full skeleton automatics!)

in terms of quality, esp the movement?

I like the Capeland better than the Classima... (Classima = too thin & marries you to dressy... Capeland = more sport/dress and all the time).
B&M is, strangely, one of my favs...
