Just hope folks take her seriously and give her the benefit of the doubt at 22.

I sure as hell didn't vote for her. She's a fucking college student, she doesn't have time to supervise shit. Also, the N&O profile listed her major, which was something like "English and Women and Gender Studies," which is possibly the only degree more useless than mine.

I'm sure she's a very nice young lady and I would be glad to get up in dem guts, but I wasn't gonna vote for her.

I'd rather have someone who has a passion for doing what is right for water and soil conservation than a person with corporate interests to manipulate the standards such that they would better serve some companies' profit margin. Clean water shouldn't be a political hockey puck.

Clean water is the ULTIMATE political resource. Everyone has to drink. Every business needs it for industrial use. The people who control the water have the power. Hell, the Raleigh city council puts power washers and car washes out of business on a regular basis.

But water is certainly not a right. Expect the african business model to catch on here eventually...you buy prepaid water credit cards and pay per liter. None of this use the tap now, pay later bullshit.

Also, she'd get it.

If you think that wars fought over oil were rough, wait until we're fighting over fresh water.

Jesus Christ. If we're at the point where we're evaluating our political candidates based on which high school they went to then we are truly fucked.

And I'd rather have someone who wasn't, say, a FULL TIME STUDENT, someone who wouldn't have to make choices between writing her paper on "The Awakening" and making that big decision about the water that I drink fucking daily. I'd also rather have someone whose educational background had something to do with soil or water and not bitching about patriarchy.

I got an email saying that she was actually born in Kenya and that she's refused to provide a birth certificate.

^^

you just want to be bitchy, don't you?

how much education do you think most district supervisors have? these aren't scientists. they're ussually farmers (like candidate dave adams) or something off the wall (like the candidate marshall harvey who was retired school teacher with a degree in sociology or something like that).

trust me, your drinking water will be fine (i'm not sure why it wouldn't be). so you can stop pretending to care about this.

I personally consider clean water a right. Atleast enough to sustain ones life (ie drinking water). If everyone has the right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" are you not denying them the right to life if you deny them the water they need to live through the day?

The entire world would disagree with you. If they want to live through the day they had better have the cash to buy water in the morning.

I want to sound shocked that we elected a student to this or any actual government position, and I think I'm succeeding in that.

Farmers' work revolves around soil and water. I've good reason to expect them to be fairly knowledgeable on the subject. A retired school teacher at least has some life experience (and, for that matter, time on their hands to devote to things like our water and soil).

I expect that it will be. My suspicion is that the position doesn't have quite the power that we'll suddenly find cadmium-flavored tap water or anything. I don't think that the position will be filled as effectively as it could and should be, however, and I'm concerned that a number of people seem happy to vote for someone because they're cute and went to the same school as they did.

I just randomly picked a woman's name for that last slot on the ballot.

Turns out it was this woman!

Sweet!

^^ Your right to find water any legal way. You also cannot survive without food and shelter. We have homeless shelters for this. I recognize your right to stay in a homeless shelter and get all the water, food, and shelter you need to survive. And in this society, said homeless shelters tend to be provided by religious charities. All the UN requires is that they be there, correct?

Homeless people do not have the right to drink from a stranger's water hose or collect water from public lakes. If there is not a shelter nearby, they have the right to die. So sayeth every nation on the planet.
