Interesting. I was wondering about this the other day - when, exactly, did I transition from "it's fine to say this as a casual insult" to "using this as a casual insult is an ignorant, hateful, loathsome thing to do"? Evidently some time after September 2011.

Then the question is why the change, or perhaps, why the realization? Aside from the collective wave of sanity that seemed to wash over the country in the 2010s with the legalization of gay marriage, the end of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," and all that, best guess is that I found myself actively socializing with homosexuals for the first time. Prior to, I hadn't been avoiding gays as such, but rather liberal politics and political correctness insufferable and to that point every non-straight person I'd met had embodied those characteristics.

Well, anyway. In the unlikely event that anyone from the LGBT community remains on this site from those days, I apologize.

2013 is a reasonable estimate but as someone who wasn't an active feminist, atheist, or college student at that point, I think a more plausible rationale is that around that time I (a) found myself in a situation where a high proportion of my American colleagues were gay, and (b) discovered that one of my longtime friends had been in the closet the whole time, which, let me tell you, that's one to make you feel like an asshole.
