So.... I am in the first semester of my senior year. I have one semester left but due to some bad past semesters my GPA is right at a 2.0... There is a pretty good possibility that I may fall below a 2.0 and will be put on academic suspension. Does anyone know if you can get the dean of your major or anyone else to let you come back to school next semester without having to miss take a semester break? This will add another year to my schooling and would be able to pull my GPA above a 2 as well as graduate by the end of next semester...

Anyone have advice or an idea???

Congrats to you because you really have to try to fail out of college.

Just drop out now and create a killer dotcom startup...or ace your exams...or wash dishes for half a year and come back. None of us really care. All are honorable and viable options. But whatever you do, do something.

the student handbook does not offer any insight into your problem...

If you can prove you've had hardship that led to your rough semester then the counseling center can get you back in on alternative readmission. I did that last fall and the counselors over there are pretty helpful.

You shouldnt go on academic suspension immediately though. I didnt think the University would suspend people from attending during the spring (unless their GPA is less than a 1.0). At least thats what some dean or somebody told me last summer when I was trying to simply find out if I was suspended or not (I was in some sort of policy limbo and no one wanted to let me register or tell me I was suspended.)

Also, if it will help and not hinder your graduating, the counselors and your advisor can retroactively withdraw you from an entire semester if youve had some good semesters since then.

Good Luck

Can you take an incomplete in a course that you are worried will pull you down, maybe work something out with the professor to complete the course in the spring so as to keep your GPA up for now? (I have no idea if that would work or how incompletes affect one's GPA)

I'm not sure how this could help, but is there a way to work summer courses into your schedule at all to pull up your GPA? Maybe a light load next semester, and finish over the summer, spread things out a little so you aren't spread as thin on the work. I don't know how the semester off thing plays into or interacts with summer courses, just thought maybe that might be an avenue to explore to avoid coming back next fall or later if you're a senior now.

I agree that talking to a counselor and your adviser are probably good bets to help you list out and weigh out all of your options. But if it comes down to it, finishing up college a year late isn't the end of the world, a lot of people wind up on the 5 or 6 year plan because of getting sick, hitting a rough patch, changing majors, spending time abroad, or a whole host of reasons.
