The first time I tried them they were unripe and someone was giving it to me as a joke. It was probably 15 years before I tried them again.

Just went to the market. Got some great looking brussel sprouts, spring onions, collards, and rutabaga

Go to the market and give the farmers some financial love. This time of year is always slow for them.

I once heard the main one here in Raleigh is the highest grossing year round market in the States. I wonder if that's true.

on a whim I got "ugly" sweet potatoes from the farmer's market. They had light, very wrinkly skin and light insides. But they were absolutely delicious. The flesh was sweet and buttery with a velvety texture. It was a bit extra work to peel cause of the wrinkles but OMG ... totally worth it.

what do persimmons taste like. I want to get an "exotic" fruit tree for my yard and unfortunately pummelo does not do good in this area apparently and I am not a fig fan.

^ 3 they are absolutely not bitter unless they are picked too soon. Persimmons do well in our climate as do pomegranate if trimmed properly.

^ Gracias

Went to the farmers market this morning to get our veggies for the week. Though I guess I was "early" the market is supposed to be open from 5am. I go up to a peach stand and ask for a basket of peaches, holding out $5. Dude goes, "We're not open yet and I don't have a dollar change."

"Okay, so just give me an extra peach or two and we'll call it even."

"But we're not open yet."

At which point the peach lady across the aisle says, "I'll sell you peaches," lol. I also bought a watermelon from her since she wanted my money more than the other guy

I'm thinking about signing up for a CSA box instead of buying all my veggies piecemeal. I tend to buy too much when left to my own decision making devices because it all looks so good!

I noticed last weekend that the market doesn't use an apostrophe, but I think the restaurant does (I can't remember what the signage at the location has, but when I was there I remember seeing a mix of all three on different things)

then on the site half the time it's Farmer's.

heard about this this weekend at the farmer's market: http://www.theproducebox.com/

Quote :
"Step 1 – ORDER: Each week, you’ll receive an email from us listing the contents of the boxes, add-ons available, and any fruit boxes we will deliver the following week. You'll also hear about news from the farms and/or any interesting info about products coming up.

Our "default" box is delivered automatically and contains the most popular items for the current harvest, with plenty of each. Many members accept the default box each week, but some prefer to go to the site and choose their own box since the alternates usually contain 1-2 different items from the original. So one alternate box might have a double peach-share, or another might have a hot pepper mix, or it might even be a "surprise" box from the farm, just for fun. You can further customize your box by adding extra items(extra shares of a fruit or veggie, honey, local bread, sauces, etc).

Here's what was in ONE of our boxes the week of July 6/7, 2011: Remember, there were FIVE boxes to choose from that week. And this one was almost overflowing:
Personal Watermelon
Roma Tomatoes
Sweet Red Bell Peppers
Blueberries
6 ears of corn
Cucumbers
Red Potatoes (2 quarts)

Of course, you can SKIP one week or multiple weeks whenever you'd like for any reason. And you don't pay for a box if you skip.

Step 2 – PAY: When you enroll, we will bill your account for the seasonal enrollment fee of $15.00. We will renew your membership automatically and bill you the enrollment fee again each year in January. Once the season starts, you will pay $22 each week for a standard box plus the price of any add-ons. All prices include sales tax and the cost of delivery. The enrollment fee helps us to cover the costs of boxes and containers that don’t last more than one season and all payments are processed using a credit or debit card.

Step 3 – RECEIVE and ENJOY: On Wednesday or Thursday, depending on your neighborhood or office, you will receive delivery of your produce box! Your produce will have been harvested at LOCAL farms in North Carolina, at the peak of ripeness, gathering as much nutrients as possible from the environment! We visit every farm we buy from, and that would be hard to do if we used farms in California or Florida. We then deliver the box DIRECT to you. (Much better than the often 3-4 DAY old produce at the grocery store!)

Step 4 – REUSE AND RECYCLE: Save any small cartons and place them inside your box. On the next delivery morning, remember to place them inside your empty box and set in the delivery location. We’ll pick up and use them all over again!"

anyone done this?

I did it last year, it ended up just being too expensive and way too many things were coming in the boxes that I didn't use or didn't like. This year I am just going to the farmers' market more often and buying the things I like

My family used to do it but we did a box from an individual farm. It was great! I want to start doing it again. I'm thinking of doing one from a local, organic farm rather than the Produce Box. There's a couple different options from nearby farms:

http://www.bensproduce.blogspot.com/
http://www.coonrockfarm.com/
http://www.hilltopfarms.org/
http://www.wildonionfarms.com/

I'm sure there's more I'm missing.

There's also CSAs that do just seafood or meat that I may start doing as well.

Yeah, with these boxes you must be an adventurous eater and not picky. Although, I know that Hilltop Farms' box is really more like a farm share and you pick out the vegetables you want. I haven't found a vegetable I don't like so these are perfect for me. And if you are ending up with too many vegetables, then just can or pickle them for use in winter!

Oh yeah, and I saw an ad for this CSA box in the Independent Weekly this week:
https://carolinagrown.org/

It's like Produce Box but focuses on organic produce and you can also get meat from them.

Yeah, people need to keep in mind that when they do those CSA's and farmshares, they have ZERO control over what it is that they get.

So if you're like me, and only want Tomatoes, Cucumbers, etc., and have no interest in squash, radishes, eggplants... then a CSA might not be a good idea.

That said, my late-bloomer tomatoes are finally sprouting in my backyard, so i'm excited about that. keeping an eye on them everyday. I'm actually using a topsy turvy... against my better judgment, but the result has been astounding as to the size of the plant itself. My plant hangs in excess of 6 feet.

Not necessarily true. They have ones now where you buy points and then use those points to choose the produce you want. But that said, if you're expecting to get summer vegetables in winter, tough luck.

I don't specifically dislike much of the vegetables they sent me, but when they sent 4 eggplants to use in a single box, I feel a little ripped off - and a person can eat only so many eggplants in a week before they never want to eat another eggplant. There were multiple times when I'd add up the cost of the vegetables if they were purchased at HT or Farmers Market and it'd be like $12 - when I paid $25 for the box.
