I have an issue that I need to conduct research on, but having trouble with just simple internet searches. I currently like in Oklahoma, and the area of research is in NC, thus making it difficult for me to just drive to a state office. I should be coming back to the area around Christmas, so I was just wondering what specific public records can be obtained from the state/county on an individual (related or unrealted), and perhaps what offices should I visit? Also, is there anyone out there with experience using a private investigator? Any good references would help! 11/27/2010 1:06:28 AM |

all kinds of records are available to the public, you need to narrow down what you are looking for to get any kind of answer. Are you looking for property information, court records, marriages, tax information, automobile registration, what do you want? Also, what county? If you are looking for anything held in county courthouses its usually available but how to get it depends on the county. Wake and many large counties make a lot of information available online and you would have to go to the courthouse in many smaller counties and pay for any copies you make. I used to do a lot of property and deed research so if its related to anything like that I may be able to answer a question but I'm not sure what you are looking for. 11/27/2010 3:13:17 AM |

Mainly a record of birth, possibly an address (or last known) or some kind of contact information. Also, this is not in a relatively big county (in the se-ern part of the state).
The only thing is that I only know the person(s) first name(s), last known location during a certain year, and approximate age(s). 11/27/2010 3:28:41 AM |

^^ I don't know the story, but it doesn't have to be creepy. It could be someone looking up their biological parent/grandparent... something like that. It's only creepy if it's a girl. 11/27/2010 11:09:20 AM |

Help us out here. What age were they in the time frame that you know about? Any chance they owned the place they lived or were related to the person that did? How long ago was it? 11/27/2010 7:40:02 PM |

birth records are public but you may need to go to the courthouse to get a copy. it will be in the county where the are born. Some counties will have this online. I know my way around a bunch of small courthouses in the east and northeast part of the state if you need any help there.
if they own property you can get an address through tax records or property transactions very easily. i've also used pay websites to get an address when i needed to have someone served with papers, i can't remember which one i used but it was one of the first google results. a basic search was cheap and i got all kinds of info with a search for about $75. the PI i use for employee background checks charges me $30-$50 which seems to be about the going rate. 11/28/2010 1:41:00 AM |

I used intelius about 7 years ago and it was well worth the cost. May be more now but for ~25 bucks I was able to track someone down and get all the documents I needed on them. Ended up saving ms a couple hundred bucks over using a PI or going to state and county offices to order documents. 11/28/2010 4:48:15 AM |

Sorry about it sounding creepy. My parents divorced in 2002, and my dad moved in 2005 to Tabor City, NC. He passed away a year ago, and I was trying to find a couple of people he was connected with during his last few years. I doubt they have internet access, so finding them through Facebook, etc. won't work. 11/29/2010 3:24:52 PM |

You may be able to search tax records via the internet from where you are.

It may require you to have more information than you have on hand though.

^^My cousin's law firm is based in Tabor City/Whiteville, probably the biggest in the area (not saying much). I'm not sure if they could help, but they definitely could point you in the right direction. PM me if you need some contact info. 11/29/2010 3:36:29 PM |
