Young, who just experienced the hardest loss for NC Dems in a long time, is finishing his tenure.

Carter:

Quote :
"By the time Buncombe County Democratic Party Chair Charles Carter took the stage at the Renaissance hotel last night to brandish a copy of the Asheville Citizen-Times for a “Dewey defeats Truman”-style moment, it was clear that the county had defied the national trend, with local Democrats in most cases winning handily over their GOP rivals.

Pointing to a headline that declared “Buncombe GOP Voters Make Gains,” Carter savored the moment.

“Really?” he said. “Let’s remember this. Let’s remember that our volunteers came out and worked hard to make sure this didn’t happen. Buncombe stayed blue!”"

Being a county party chair certainly seems like a reasonable stepping stone to a higher level party chair, and it'd be nice to have the energy and credibility that comes with a recent win, especially since he'd be replacing someone who had a hard loss.

I've heard some comments saying that some in the base wont be happy that he supported a conservadem like Shuler. On the other hand some people say that is a good thing being able to have coordinated, as a county chair, the liberal local Asheville campaigns, with the more conservative campaign for a national position Shuler was running for. To quote Gordon Smith (a relatively new Asheville town councilman):

Quote :
"If Charles Carter is interested in this post, then I'd recommend y'all take a look at him.

He assembled a fantastic grassroots organizing effort in Buncombe County. The place was buzzing with volunteers throughout the final months. He's one of these guys who knows how to attract talent, organize them, then get out of the way and let them do their work. He managed to get a conservative candidate like Shuler to coordinate campaign efforts with progressive candidates like Susan Fisher and Patsy Keever. Carter also served in the State Senate back in the 90's until an accident landed him in the hospital for a year. I believe he was the youngest person ever elected to that position."

But David Parker has a much longer resume, and I'd bet will get more support as an establishment candidate. And to my knowledge he's the only one to officially declare his intent and start running yet.

Quote :
"Immediately announcing his candidacy for the post was David Parker, a 56-year old attorney from Lake Norman,. Parker is a a veteran of Democratic politics. He is a member of the Democratic National Committee, a former party first vice chairman, and he managed Sen. Terry Sanford's 1992 re-election campaign."

Who am I missing? Is there anyone else who is definitely or likely to run?

I...I fell like there is a joke here, but I'm too lazy/decent to hunt it down.

Holy shit! I didn't know Carter was still in politics. He was one of my favorite teachers in high school and I volunteered for his state senate campaign some way back in the day. He is a seriously good guy and I'd probably vote for him for anything.

^Well if you wanted to start a "Draft Carter for NC Dem Chair" facebook group I'd be happy to promulgate it across the NC Democratic interwebz. From what I've heard he's weighing the possibility, so public support could help sway him towards getting involved. The Billy Kennedy challenge to Virginia Foxx was the result of such a group.

But it would need to come from someone who has some legitimacy for supporting him, who could write a description for the group to explain why he deserves support, and it sounds like you do have that legitimacy.

A third name has surfaced from Efland. He's a state house member who recently won re-election.

If Bill "I abandoned my wife" Faison gets elected Party Chair, I'm going to quit the NC Democratic Party and never vote for another Democrat as long as I live

He is the most egotistical douchebag to walk the face of the earth. There is not a single redeeming quality about this complete and utter douchebag.
