"US President Barack Obama said he felt Fifa had made "the wrong decision" in awarding the 2022 tournament to Qatar."

WTF? Oh noes, the World Cup went to an Arab/Muslim country... that's wrong! Maybe he should stick to running the country and closing down Guantanamo as he promised?

Quote :
""qatar's population is like 1 million, this is going to be like having the world cup in a hotter version of san antonio""

It is 1.7 million actually. And I get your point, but I don't understand it... so what if the population is small? BTW, Qatar has the world's highest per capita GDP. Yes, it is boiling there in the summer, but I just read this on BBC:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/9250612.stm

Quote :
"Under proposals submitted to Fifa, Qatar would renovate three stadiums and build nine new ones, with the 12 venues divided among seven host cities.

This includes the proposed 86,000-capacity Lusail Stadium, which is expected to be completed by 2019 and is scheduled to host the opening and final matches.

Bid organisers said that all the stadiums will be climate-controlled and zero-carbon emitting to combat what could be temperatures as high as 50C during the two hottest months of the year in Qatar.

The country has also launched a huge spending policy in recent years to accommodate its growing population, splashing out billions on rail, air and road links.

Plans are also in place to complete a metro system to connect each stadium by 2017, meaning travel time between venues would be no more than an hour."

That's good news.

These are the points of concern:

Quote :
"Doubts remain over whether the country will be able to cope with an influx of approximately 400,000 fans.

The country currently has around 50,000 hotel rooms, but bid leaders have promised that 95,000 will be available come 2022.

There are also concerns that the demand for alcohol and potential rowdy behaviour from football fans could clash with the conservative social mores of a country that is still a relatively closed Islamic nation."

1) They are promising 95,000 rooms, but they also say 400,000 people will come...?

2) Social/moral concerns.

well, you know that this will also draw extremists out from other parts of the middle east who'll have an easier time getting into Qatar, than say, the rest of the world.

Something bad will happen, and a large number of westerners will die.

I think the players will be fine in those ridiculous stadiums they are building.

However, the fans are going to be miserable. Not at the games, but in the down time. World Cups should be held in attractive destinations. If I'm going to a World Cup, I'm going to make a vacation out of it. South Africa, awesome. Germany, awesome. Brazil, double awesome. Qatar, fuck you Fifa. One thing you won't hear in the next 12 years, "you know, I've always wanted to visit Bahrain, the World Cup in Qatar will provide the perfect opportunity for this!!"

And the heat, holy shit. There will be some vendors making a shit-ton of money selling refreshments and those little fan/spray water bottles. I remember going to an Olympic Soccer game in Miami back in '96...and it was damn uncomfortable, but bearable. But in that heat?? Why would you want to spend a ton of money to visit an area of the world that no one has any desire to be, and melt every day while you're there.

The "high risk" part is an important factor...but not as important as the fact that nobody wants to fucking go to Qatar.

Did I read somewhere that it's the size of Connecticut?? With 1.7 million people there already with the influx of another half a million people?? Fucking brilliant!!

Yea I know, that was just sarcasm... but you tell me what problem OBAMA has with this (other than his personal opinion, which everyone is entitled to) that he has to make a PUBLIC comment about it that gets onto international news?

He should do his fucking job and stop complaining about things publicly that are not in his domain (unless FIFA's results were due to corruption/bribery/etc).

Quote :

By then the population would be 2.5 million at least.

Where the fuck has the pronunciation "cutter" been coming from?

I always thought it was (phonetically) "ka tar." One of my roommates said "cutter" last night, and I figured he was just being a dumbass until I heard it pronounced the same way on Mike & Mike this morning (not that they're the standard for anything though).

Give me like four seconds and I'll find the same quote from the leaders of all the losing bids

And it ain't like Captain Qatar wouldn't have said the same thing if they had lost out

I mean do even you realize the economic implications of several hundred thousand foreigners spending a few weeks in the US? Missing out on that alone is reason enough for Obama to be disappoint.

Did the Qatar government issue any self-congratulatory statements? If so, they should get back to doing their fucking jobs.

A specific sport doesn't really appeal to me. Because I don't like this sport, it means that the sport is stupid, unimportant, lame, and is only played by third world countries. People who do like this sport deserve to die.

You are a fucking retard...and so ridiculously biased towards any discussion involving the middle east that it's not even funny.

For the 2022 selection I wanted (1) a cool country I could visit for the first time and use the World Cup as a centerpiece of a vacation or (2) it to be in the United States if (1) couldn't happen. So out of these choices: (Australia, Japan, Qatar, South Korea, and the United States), I would have chosen Australia, then Japan, then the United States. My logic is probably the same for about 99.9% of the rest of the world's population (you fall in that .1%)...except for Americans who want it to be close to home.

I'll it for probably the eighth time...NOBODY WANTS TO VISIT QATAR....NOBODY! Might as well put the World Cup in the middle of the fucking Sahara desert or on put some pretty stadiums in Antarctica (extreme...but I bet there are people that would rather see a soccer game and a live polar bear than watch a game in Qatar and then go out and get skin cancer in 5 minutes).

I just came here to say that 5 minutes of exposure to the sun can't, by itself, cause skin cancer.

Yeah I'm trying to figure out that magic math as well. If you assume double occupancy for each hotel room, that means you'd need 200,000 rooms to accommodate people (this is assuming their 400,000 number is not counting local attendants). Even if it was triple occupancy for each room that's about 130,000 rooms you'd need.
