I have several video clips I recorded last Christmas that I want to put on a dvd for everyone this year. A member of the family has passed away and I thought the video would be a good way for everyone to remember him. Anyway, I made several copies of the dvd using Windows DVD Maker only to find out that the sound doesn't work on any of them- in computers or dvd players. So today I tried to make the dvd using MediaImpressions. I inserted the video clips but when I try to burn the dvd, it won't let me choose the device and begin the process. Does anyone know how to make Windows DVD Maker work or have another (preferably free) program I could try?

probably an audio codec compatibility issue. what was the format of the original file? .avi? .wmv?

1. Open Windows DVD maker.
2. Click Tools, and then click Options.
3. Click the Compatibility tab.
4. Do one of the following:
•To turn off a filter, clear the check box next to the video filter name.
•To turn on a filter, select the check box next to the video filter name.
•To restore the default list, click Restore All Defaults.
5. Restart DVD maker and burn a new DVD to check if the issue persists.

tried it with defaults restored and still no sound.

there has got to be an easier way to do this

I tried it after removing the filters- still no sound.

I give up. Guess they won't get a dvd after all.

I'd try downloading and installing the most recent audio and video codecs on your machine...worst case it will help playback reliability...best case it might solve your problem

There is a BASIC, a STANDARD and a FULL download...they're all free...I might try BASIC first, as you might not need the FULL download, but its worth a shot

Feed the file through gSpot - it will analyze and tell you if your computer has the necessary codecs. If not you'll need a package to correct this problem.

It looks menacing, but just drag your file to anywhere on top of the running program and it will start churning. If you're having trouble post a screenshot and we can analyze.

I don't know what a codec is and I don't know how to do a screen shot. I tried downloading and using the trial version of nero 10 because I read that nero vision would convert the .avi files to something burnable and viewable on a dvd player, but it says I have to pay for the full version to do that.

I read that many people have had these problems with dvd maker and media impression and nothing worked. Should I just pay for the full nero? Anyone have experience with it?

Did you run it through gspot yet? That will give us more information than anything.

Steps for screen shot:
1) Along top of keyboard "Print Screen" - be sure to hit shift or function if you're on a laptop
2) Open an image editor; windows has paint built in and works fine for this.
3) Hit CTRL+V (hold control, hit v) to paste the screenshot into your editer
4) Use the paintbrush or equivalent to black out any personal information on the screenshot (optional)
5) Save to desktop as JPEG or BMP or PNG, upload to internet (tww/photobucket/flikr/etc), post in this thread.

Nice. Well, it appears you have the recommended codecs - are you sure you're not getting sound (it could be really soft - try with headphones).

Another test is to hit the Microsoft A/V buttons in order 1, 2, etc. That should spit out additional info if playback attempts fail.

Would you be interested in sending it to me via FTP? I can dianose and render to ISO or WMV for burning. We have a 20Mbit internet feed, and I'm working on 2 quad core machines here at work. This would be quick (sans your upload time)
