Just got my assignment today: I'll be a judge advocate general (JAG) attorney for the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, GA.

Anyone know the area (Hinesville/Savannah) well?...I'll be there in mid-June once my training wraps up.

They called me yesterday saying that I was only "penciled in" to go to Stewart, but that it wasn't looking good (Stewart was my #2 choice). I was told that there was no availability at the other 7 posts that were on my preference list, and was instructed to make a list of places outside of my top 8 that I'd like to go.

My choices were extremely limited (we only had about 22 bases to choose from originally), and were narrowed down to Bliss (in El Paso, TX), Polk (rural Louisiana), and Drum (isolated in upstate NY).

I had mentally prepared myself to bite the bullet and take Bliss, but gave Stewart one last shot when I called in this morning. I laid out exactly why Stewart was my #2, and let them know that I wasn't trying to complain or curry favor, but rather than I wanted to make sure the Army knew there were reasons behind why Stewart was on my list.

Once I got done with my explanation, the Major said that he could keep me at Stewart

Be ready for heat and humidity. I still don't understand why people complain about Raleigh being humid.

Go to St. Patrick's day, an oyster roast, and try not to spend too much time around the crazy religious people that are sadly common there.

I went through basic training in Columbia, SC in July/August, and have done some training at Ft. Benning, so hopefully it won't be too much worse.

OHOHHOH YES! It's funny because he implied that religious and crazy are synonymous!

Savannah is a cool town but Christ Almighty does it get hot and humid.

Well, congrats I guess, but I still say Korea has much more potential for excitement.

Thank god you didn't get Polk, I was there for 3 years, it's godawful

However be prepared to hate the Dog-Faced Soldier song.

Yeah, apparently they're on the verge of just assigning 2 people to go there since no one from my class had it on their preference list (surprise surprise).

You do NOT want to get stationed at Ft Bliss.

I recall back, many years ago, when I was still trying to do ROTC at NCSU, and so was Boondock.

Sgt. Holliday's exact words:

"If you get assigned to Fort Drum, tell them you're gay." Followed by a half-hour discourse on the shortcomings of that particular facility, most of which were related to the weather.

So at least you dodged that bullet.

If you survived our summer, you should be just fine in Georgia...
