The first-run PS3s are fantastic.

[Edited on December 17, 2010 at 8:37 AM. Reason : But you can get a damn PS2 for the price of a nice dinner for two.]

it pissed me off that they made PS3's unable to run PS2 games. I mean i have both systems, but it would be nice to be able to play both games in one console.

^^It was intentional.

^When I bought mine I wanted a backwards compatible one, but I didn't feel like paying a premium for a used PS3.

b/c PS2 sales are still fairly healthy. They briefly sold a model that can play PS2 games. Specter mentioned having one. And b/c they have this ability they can sell 2nd hand for $400-500 easy.

From what I understand, new PS3's can still play ps2 games. They just have a limited compatibility list because it's a software emulation.

The 60gb ones from back in the day, actually had the ps2 hardware in them for backwards play. This was a cost that kept the ps3 so high. Once they cut that out, there was a price drop.

^ wrong. new "slim" PS3's dont support software emulation, so no backwards compatibility at all.

^^They completely removed the PS2 backwards compatibility in the new PS3 models. Basically, if your PS3 is either slim or has 2 USB ports, it can't play PS2 games.

For emulation, try PCSX2. You'll need to get the BIOS somewhere (torrent). And probably a really good processor and graphics card.

Yup yup, I liked it when I had the same one, but got sick of waiting for GT5 so I sold it last year for exactly the same price I got the ps3 when MGS4 came out. Actually made out 40 bucks since I had walmart giftcard at the time of purchase.

I'm surprised that the newer ps3's aren't backwards compatible.

Also Granite, I think the price of the ps3 was high mainly due to the fact that the main ps3 chip and boards were expensive, as well as the R&D research that was involved. When ps3 first came out, even the 20GB versions was costing sony like 160 bucks per set, I think it was like 110 for the 60GB since it was priced a 100 bucks more.
