I'm looking to entertain a friend either this wednesday/thursday night. I was looking up cooking classes, salsa nights, DPAC events, etc. with no luck. I'd be open to Raleigh/Chapel Hill too, but any fun things you'd recommend to do in durham and surrounding areas? Thought about 'canes game or ncsu game (vs. delaware st.) but I think that'd be boring for her. Lemeknowkthxs

go to dos perros, cuban revolution, and whiskey....for the hot guava margaritas, mojitos, and great scotch, respectively.

Dinner at the Federal and coffee at Francesca's.
Full Steam Brewery. I haven't been there, but I hear they have ping pong now.
The Monti. This is supposedly really popular. Some sort of storytelling, but it's not really my bag.

The Tyler's/Cuban Revolution are is lit up pretty nice this time of year. I haven't eaten at the Federal but I've heard the food is good from several people. I ate at Dos Perros once and it was awesome. Full Steam Brewery is good and does have ping pong now.

They have a nice farmer's market.

Occasionally there's some folk bands that play out there, too. They'll play you a tune if you toss them some incentive.

I've been to Duke Gardens several times too for fun stuff. Winter time sucks for finding things to do. Just go to a Hurricanes game.

Here's my obligatory suggestion...even though a lot of the bands are too indie for me, gotta throw in a plug cuz Chris is a good friend of mine.

Take her to Scratch. That woman makes some mean pies. I haven't been since she actually opened a restaurant but I really want to try it.

I agree with the Cuban Revolution (American Tobacco) area...it is lit up so pretty for Christmas with the tower covered in lights and there were also trees near the DPAC that were fun to look at...

You can always walk around the Brightleaf area too, there are some fun restaurants and vintage stores if that is your thing...

If you are looking for an experience, look no further. Durham's hottest club is "Trash". As you step through the doors of this meatpacking hot spot, you'll be greeted by none other than Pierre, the Muslim Elvis impersonator. This club has everything - clones, freaks, sneezing, a Russian man on a pre-paid cell phone, and anyone can get in. There is no password. At the door just do the Cosby face.

If you are just trying to have a classic Durham night...

Durham's hottest club is "Gush". Club owner Gay Dunnaway has built a fantasy world that answers the question "NOW?". This place has everything, geeks, sherpas, a Jamaican nurse wearing a shower cap, room after room of broken mirrors, and look over there - is that Mick Jagger? No. Its a fat kid on a slip and slide. His knees look like biscuits and he is ready to party.

Looking for family fun?

Durham's hottest club is "PUSH". It has everything - ghosts, banjos, Carl Palladino, a stuck up kitten who won't sign autographs, furlkles. Furkles are fat Urkles. After you've been with one of those guys you'll ask yourself "Did I do that?".

Our usuals are Dain's, the Fed, or Bull McCabes for bar food. Torero's for Mexican. Cosmic for late night burritos. Motorco, Fullsteam or Pinhook for shows. Whiskey for birthday drunkenness. Berry mojitos are good at Cuban Revolution.

I find everywhere else is too overpriced or the food sucks, or it doesn't fit our vibe. We're more into bicycles, bars and brew than martinis and dressing up fancy.

For more artsy stuff, Monkey Bottom or the Scrap Exchange. We don't go to the Farmer's Market anymore because of screaming children, strollers and overcrowdedness, but it runs 3:30-6:30 on Wednesdays. We're getting a CSA starting next spring instead.

Everything else is house shows/doesn't happen on Wed./Thurs. night.

My nights in public Durham in the last few years have pretty much consisted solely of some combination of James Joyce, the Fed, and Cosmic. Sounds banal but we always have a good time.

All jokes aside, why would you even consider Durham? The place is a ghost town (unless the Bulls are playing that night) after 7 pm. And yes, my "mom's ass" agrees as well.

^^ Do you live there? No, you probably don't.

I will agree that the city isn't for everyone- I've seen a bunch of hipster kids get bored with it pretty fast because they expect there to be huge scenes to plug into, or that "it's not like New York or Portland". It's a decent place if you want to buy an affordable house or have cheap rent, are creative enough to make your own fun, and have enough social skills to not hate half the town because so and so dated your ex.

Durham is a cool fucking town.

9th Street reminds me a lot of Lexngton Ave in downtown Asheville.
