Old thread was dead. This show premieres a week from tonight.

Official Trailer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PajqY0VgYiU

I'm sure we're all very wary of NBC superhero shows, but it might be worth a shot.

I will also be checking this out, but the early word is that it isn't very good. None of the people who ran Heroes into the ground are involved in this, so at least it's got that going for it.

I've always felt that the long-form narrative afforded by a TV series is well suited to the superhero genre, but the execution of such shows has been almost universally terrible.

How many good live action superhero TV shows have their been? Smallville (I've never watched because I'm not a big fan of Superman but isn't it well received) and what else

I agree in theory the format should provide a better opportunity but with comic book movies coming out in pre-planned trilogies to start with, it's not as big a difference

i'd say buffy & angel count as good superhero shows. heroes s1 was good as well (but the rest of the seasons managed to undo everything good s1 did)

The first few seasons of Smallville were really good but it jumped the shark years ago.

I seem to remember the old school Incredible Hulk was awesome but then again I was like 5 yrs old at the time so yeah.

As was pointed out, the first season of Heroes was quite good.

Other than that the only superhero shows that come to mind are cartoons. It might be good that this is a completely new hero that doesn't have decades of comic books to draw from.

Smallville was good, got shitty, but turned good again.
Lois and Clark lasted I think 3-4 seasons?
Dark Angel...2 seasons
Buffy 7, Angel 5

It's just easier to do in comic form

no i'm just listing them so if anyone's happened to watch them, they can jump in

but i do think that 1950s superman, 1960s batman, hulk, 6 million dollar man, wonder woman, zorro and the flash were all fine shows

ah

I don't watch a lot of old stuff so I had no idea. Not much to choose from in the last 20 years though. I vaguely remember Lois & Clark but I can't say I've seen enough of it to accurately judge. I remember Dean Cain more for being in those MTV Rock N Jock games

i loved m.a.n.t.i.s and almost mentioned it yesterday. (my love for it might have been directly related to my age though)

you can also add power rangers, vr troopers, super human samurai syber squad, and tattooed teenage alien fighters from beverly hills although those are all kids shows and some are way more terrible than others.

I'm probably the only person that remembers watching this show:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQb1ZD9W8_c

They were trying to cash in on the popularity of a certain movie. Two guesses, and nope - it wasn't Legacy.

Ha. Street Hawk, almost forgot about that one.

I think it is moving way too fast. It went from regular cop to fugitive to hero-in-training to hero way too quickly. It's like if Batman took a week to learn how to be badass. There are lots of plot holes too... I'm not sure how wearing a cape enabled him to learn how to catch knives in the air or how the head carny found his secret layer. And I'm pretty sure that the second the bad guy had him framed, his security card to the bank vaults would have been disabled... even though they weren't, they'd be able to track whose card opened it.

Wow. They've been running ads for this for months. I guess you've avoided NBC for a long while?

I watched bits and pieces of it but not the whole thing. I saw enough though. The news report where they said something that roughly equated to "Now that this one cop is dead the corporation is now free to do what it couldn't do when the cop was alive." I guess the cop could never claim that he was framed in that well known context... granted I didn't see any of the lead up that explained why the company couldn't become a private police force with that one guy holding, um... something, out.

And yeah, you'd think they would have deactivated the card. Especially after they would have known that the same card had opened up all the vaults.

Also, running a private police force in a single, isolated city makes you the untouchable king of the world I guess. It's fun watching the show in snippets. I figure all the blanks I filled in were much more entertaining.

I also caught part of the "training". It was lol worthy. Ok, you can beat up muscle toned midget - you're ready for prime time. The whole midget thing underscored the #1 problem with all the skinny chick beat-em-up shows. You're not doing grapples and throws, you're just normal kicking someone that severely outweighs you. Average case you're probably just going to bounce off, worse case you're just going to piss the other guy off by your toothpick roundhouse kick and then they will put a severe beating on you with one punch.

Again, I flipped around some. Did they ever do a better explanation of that stupid finger waggle hypnosis?

One last bit I saw that I found funny. When the guy was at his funeral. He was like 20 feet away and he wasn't even behind the tree that much. Dude, back off a bit and buy a pair of binoculars or something.

Because it was made out of kevlar spiderwebs. Duh. I'm thinking about getting me one, since I've had lot's of problems lately with putting my candles out from across the room.

It was better than I expected. I expected it to be quite bad, and I found myself enjoying it for the most part.

I could get the whole training thing, the guy was ex-military(sounded like spec ops) and a cop, so fighting wouldn't be an issue and perhaps he had knife training in the military to go along with his computer training, haha. It showed how he learned to catch knives out of the air. He had the pitching machine and put knives in it. Practical? No. Could he practice a lot with that and get good at it over a few days? Probably. The hypnotize thing doesn't seem any more far-fetched than someone using a pocket watch to hypnotize someone, so no issues with that one.

I think it's becoming more common to have the person's first few missions as a "superhero" go terribly wrong, which is more realistic. And the midget was suppose to be incredibly strong with good hand-to-hand skills, I really enjoyed him and Vinny Jones(Scales) meeting on the boat, haha.

It's a superhero movie, there are going to be some things that are ridiculous or a little far-fetched, you could go over Batman or any other superhero and find some things that don't make any sense. Just sit back and enjoy the show.

^The guy that he was saving was the one vote they needed in the government for the city for ARK to take over the prison system as well as the police. And I imagine the head of the company that runs the police force, almost has control of the prison system, and is known to have ties to several dirty cops would likely have people in the government, so I don't see him coming out and having any type of case towards being framed.

I didn't catch the whole knife catching training so maybe I missed that as well. Was there some sort of knife wielding bad guy out there that he was training to take on? Seems like an oddly specific thing to spend loads of time training up on. I'd think most criminals would use guns.

I guess knives would be in the top 2 of popular criminal weapons though. Still, I'd like to think the criminals would prefer the method of keeping and wildly swinging a knife as opposed to the toss it and no longer have a weapon method. Then again they're trying to entertain an audience, so it can't be over analyzed. And before you ask, no I don't enjoy anything any more.

And the evil guy just puts in some wild eyez contacts whenever he feels like being bad...yeah

as usual with nbc, great production, awful direction. character development left many holes and the pace was way too high, many BAD actors, very predictable/cliche. feels like want to branch out way too fast before developing the core characters. basing your show on a comic book is cool and all but you have more than 20 pages with of pictures to convey your message, embrace your actual medium, not the one your premise is based on.
