Bought a new house and it is prewired for an alarm system (no keyboard or sensors, but the outlets and crap are there). I don't really care about monitoring (I mean, being able to install a notification via text or email or phone would be cool, but I don't want to pay for it) - I just want something that will be really loud if someone tries to break in.

I found some stuff on the internet, but just wondering if anyone tdubbers have any personal experience or recommendations?

(original thread in Old School was not getting any attention)

You should get a system man. You've got a kid now and you'll get a little deduction on your insurance.

I pay too much for ADT, but there have been two times in the last two years that I was really glad we had it.

Isn't "pre-wired" a rip off now?

I got a new system put in a few months ago and all of the sensors are wireless.

Well I just basically want a "grab the shotgun!!!" alert for us.

Cameras would be cool too, but probably too expensive.

The monthly subscription for my parent's alarm system is about the same as the rate reduction on their home insurance, so there's that to think about. You also should worry about someone breaking into the home when no one is there.

^ I am waiting to hear back what kind of discounts I can get from my agent.

I just kinda dig projects like this.

Thier site and forums are fantastic. This is an easy project you should be able to tackle. Make sure to read the forums like crazy, there is some great info in there.
