There was a similar article the other day regarding a book by Kipling whose title was that word. I believe it even involved another publisher.

I don't have a problem reading the word, but I ain't gonna say it. By the time I was starting to say words that I had been told not to say, the OJ Simpson trial was happening, and I swore to myself that nobody was ever going to get away with murdering two people just because someone else could claim to hear me say the N-word. I've never so much as muttered it under my breath for that reason.

Actually, the more I think about this, the more it pisses me off. Free societies do not whitewash their past, they confront it. Removing the word nigger from Mark Twain novels or the cover of a Joseph Conrad novel will do nothing to forward race relations in the United States. It is simply a cowardly reaction from a publisher who is afraid to address the real underlying complexities of race.


If there is one thing we do not need, it is cowardice in addressing race.

Focusing on the word "nigger" just puts more focus on race relations.

If you're white, I don't understand how you can be offended by a word that the majority of you say, whether you say it loudly enough for others to hear in public or not. This is the way it was written in the Twain texts; it's the way it should be. There are people that are offended by religion, but does that mean we should remove all references to God from the Bible so that they can read it without being offended?

No other group gets this type of treatment. In fact, only when fringe-group whites take up this cause does it get any attention. The more you give them, the more they'll take from you. When they have more than you, don't expect them to give any back until it's equal. Expect them to continue taking until they have it all.
