There should be at least one new venue this year on N.West Street. and I hope they find a way to integrate Moore Square (although the remodel likely won't be done) and the Raleigh Amphitheater into the mix with 2 or 3 bigger acts headlining each of these venues while still keeping the stage in City Plaza.

I really doubt they'll be able to use the Raleigh Amphitheatre (isn't that mostly ClearChannel/Livenation shows?)

i dunno if i'd want raleigh amphitheater used. i kinda liked the vibe last year...small intimate venues and then the main shows in city plaza, which was awesome.

i thought, anyway.

^ I think it was on facebook (not a facebook user, lol) and their main page.
http://hopscotchmusicfest.com/

instructions are near the bottom left of the page --- watch the video, name 10 bands what venues they're playing at, and submit.

winner drawn on January 31st.

titus andronicus is a name i heard mentioned for the lineup as early as a couple months ago, so they should be a go

slim's is way too small, though. pour house somehow seems right to me.

it would be cool, but TA are a much bigger band than harlem, both in reputation and physical presence

Yeah...Maybe Berkeley Cafe for TA like Fucked Up last year?

Depending on how much they cost, I could maybe see My Morning Jacket being one of the headliners since they're coming out with an album this year. I used to not really be a fan until I saw them live, they're a truly phenomenal live band and do some pretty amazing covers (including Curtis Mayfield's "Move On Up" at their Koka Booth show). I think a show by them at the City Plaza would make a lot of fans out of people who weren't previously.

My Morning Jacket would be fantastic. I wonder what their booking rate is, however.

They did a pretty good job of booking everything last year, and I'm sure they will again. I wasn't a big fan of No Age or Broken Social Scene before or after the festival, but either way I acknowledge they were good gets.

Titus Andronicus played Duke Coffeehouse not too long ago, so I wouldn't think Slim's is too small.

Smaller, apparently, but to say they are a "bigger band" for such and such is pretty laughable.

TA played here a number of times in 2010. Yes, they played the tiny Duke Coffeehouse (I think it holds 60?), but a private university pays to bring bands there for the benefit of the students, and often the bands are really too big for the room. The local TA show previous to the Duke show was at 506 and there were close to 200 people there.

As for the physical presence, Harlem are a three piece with a small drum kit and band footprint. TA have five, plus all the keyboard, string, and horn setups. That's a little much for a stage that's 12x12.

Don't get me wrong, I think the best possible outcome for Slim's is a wrecking ball, personally.

But I don't think a punk band that had a record to get the nod from Pitchfork a time or two qualifies as "too big" to play there.

I suppose I should rephrase.

I don't think they're too big to play there.

However, they're big enough to justify playing a significantly larger room.

Titus Andronicus is a much bigger touring draw than Harlem. That's just a fact. TA has more fans. Slim's just would not work for a Titus Andronicus show, not to mention the fact that they would be high enough on Hopscotch's bill to warrant a bigger venue than Slim's. Either Lincoln or The Pour Hourse or Berkeley...somewhere like that.

lol...we're not even talking about how good or bad they are, we're just talking about their draw as a touring band. noone said they were better than harlem (although i think they are).

fwiw, i think they're re-doing slim's stage sometime before the next Hopscotch, but vinylbandit is right. they can demand a larger room, and they do need some more space, even if the stage is re-done. i hope it's not Berkley, however.

i will say that i think Harlem and TA are on pretty much equal footing right now in terms of acclaim and notoriety. At the time of Hopscotch booking last year, Harlem already had one good album out, and a new release that did pretty well -- they probably could have pushed to play at a larger space, too, but instead did an awesome day show and played again that night. TA's definitely getting big quick, though, so who knows by September.

The same could be said of TA. The Airing of Grievances is a great record.

^^I just don't think it's true that Harlem is as big nationally as Titus Andronicus is. Not trying to be a know-it-all, but Titus Andronicus is quite a bit bigger and more well-known than Harlem. It's just a fact. More people know who TA is nationwide and TA has more fans.

And if we're talking about which band we like more, my vote personally goes to TA there, too. I like Harlem and everything, but TA are one of my absolute favorite artists ATM.

^ yeah, I don't doubt you on that. I was speaking from anecdotal evidence only, and that's obviously not worth much. (as in, which band do I seem to be hearing more talk about among friends locally). I'm not sure whether Harlem has made it that big nationally in comparison, now that I reconsider all of the random tv appearances I've noticed by TA this year. Personally, my only real exposure to TA was listening to The Monitor last year, and I didn't even listen to that until they had come and gone from their stop at Berkley. Shitty timing on my part.

This time around, I'm not wasting my time seeing local bands that I can see pretty much any other time of the year. That was my biggest mistake for last year's.

Yeah, I mean, local bands are great and all, but like you said, you can see them any time of the year, so if it's between them and an out-of-town touring band that I want to see, I'll take the out-of-town band.

interesting choice with lucero in that argument, seeing as how they average like 200 shows a year

I don't dislike them, just never fell in love with them

in other news, last night we discussed getting rooms at the Sheraton this year (assuming we don't win the contest, of course)

that would have the potential to make an already great weekend even greater

each night of Hopscotch cost me $12 in the cab, after tip, to city plaza and that was if i made the ride solo.

that was not bad at all.

if i win the hopscotch contest, i'll sell ya the sheraton room in exchange for the cost of my cabs and everyone wins.

I can bike to City Plaza from my house in less than ten minutes.

With that said, if I get VIP passes and a room in the same building as the free beer, you bet your ass I'm staying there.

I used the free food and free beer like twice. The Thursday sign in, and opening party. And, I think on Saturday, but that time it was only for like 15 minutes.

The only day show I made it down to was Harlem because I would be so fucking hungover, and the rest of the time I was down there, I was always doing something or going somewhere else.
