Anyone been there in Cary? I remember going in there once in the late-90s and thinking it seemed like a puppy mill front. I can't believe it's still around 1/14/2011 1:32:30 PM |

I worked there six yrs ago. So did pp. As far as I know the pups are legit. They're all vaccinated and never had serious health issues besides maybe a luxating patella here and there. The owners actually care about the animals to take proper care of them

So do backyard breeders. We should only adopt pets that were born because shitty owners didn't fix their pets and let them run loose and fuck. Or the ones that people didn't want anymore. 1/14/2011 2:44:05 PM |

That's where I got mine from. There's something to be said for knowing the health background, temperament, size, longevity, etc. of the dog's parents, grand parents, etc. I could not be happier with Dimitri, and the quality of his ancestry has a lot to do with how he turned out.
That said, there's a very good chance my next dog will be a shelter puppy, because I do believe in rescuing dogs. 1/14/2011 2:53:04 PM |

If I wanted a specific breed, i'd obviously go to a breeder (at some point I would probably like a true mastif), but I really do think more people should look into adopting
even more people should get their damn dogs spayed or neutered. I think only show dogs and purebreds, or prestigious lines of working dogs should be capable to breed. 1/14/2011 2:56:03 PM |

my mom got fucked over my a golden retriever breeder in snow camp. mom told her she wanted the calmest one from the litter, darker golden if possible. when she went to pick her new pup up, the breeder said, "this one's great for you. you've got those 12 acres for her to run on." this should have been a warning sign.
the dog doesn't have the personality of a golden at all. she's super dominant, absolutely NUTS, & doesn't listen at all. nothing at all like the golden i grew up with, or any of the others i've known. turns out she also has an inverted vulva...something that is easily noticed/diagnosed as a pup (by a vet), but completely missed in chelsea's case. over the last several months she's started getting horrible bladder infections & has crystals. poor girl. so she's going to have to have a vulvoplasty now at 3 years old, which her vet says would have been much better to do when she was a little puppy.
my brother teases my mom for buying a $1400 defective dog. we love her anyway though.
anyway, point of the story is that even if you buy a "top of the line" purebred dog from a really nice/respected breeder, you might not end up with what you were expecting.

I don't think theres anything wrong with getting a purebred but there is something wrong with getting a puppy mill dog. That's what youre getting with Pet Pad. The fact that so many breeds come from the same breeder should be a big red flag. That kennel has also been sited numerous times by the USDA. It's not so much the puppies at the shop that's the issue but the poor dogs they came from 1/15/2011 10:13:50 AM |

You can find the broker name online.
Unfortunately bloodlines and crap can be falsified, especially if done with one of those AKC wannabe registries. The best thing to do is buy from a breeder that will let you into the home and will let you meet the puppy parents. Seeing the parents' gives a good idea of temperment. If you are really lucky the grandparents will be on site too. Personally I wouldn't bother buying from a breeder that doesn't have a CHIC number for their sire and dam either. The CHIC lets you look up all their health testing to make sure they're healthy. This is especially important in breeds with problems like hip dysplasia etc. 3/10/2011 9:17:11 AM |

Seriously? We're eating puppies now, too? I thought cows were generally valued for their food content, and puppies mostly for their cuteness content. A cow that can't make a good burger isn't generally adopted as a pet, and a dog that isn't man's best friend isn't made into stir fry.

A message from the owners of Pet Pad :
Quote : | "Some folks here seem to be getting their information only from Animal Rights groups. It is hard to watch the horrible videos and pictures they post in order to get you to send them money. But those images don't represent ALL breeders. Look at the people in the occupations you are in, are there good ones and bad ones? Do you think it's fair if some group trying to raise money decided to lump you in with the bad people in your industry?
You have to keep in mind that groups like Peta and HSUS don't want anyone to own animals for any purpose..food, entertainment or pets.
It's also unfair to lump Sharon, our breeder, in with bad breeders. Yes..she is a large-scale breeder..but that doesn't automatically mean she doesn't care properly for her dogs. She does have a vet. on-site, she does DNA-testing on her male dogs. She does OFA testing on many of her larger breeds. We have been carrying her puppies for 16 years, and have been very happy with the their quality and health.
Following the rules and being conscientious costs a lot of money. A bad breeder isn't going to pay for those things. Many of the bad web comments you will find about Sharon are coming from radical animal rights groups.
We don't lie about our puppies' health as some insinuate. All our puppies get a health exam from our vet before they are sold. Customers are given every bit of information on health, vaccinations, source etc before they make their decision. They are also required to read a "Things to Consider" booklet which outlines many of the negative aspects of dog ownership. This way, customers are forced to think about their decision a little more.
As with any living creature, some of our puppies turn out to have health issues. That is why we have a health guarantee. We guarantee against hereditary and congenital health problems for a year. We pay vet bills up to the price of the puppy. Our guarantee may not be life-time, but it's more than most private breeders will give you. And North Carolina has zero laws regarding the purchase of animals. So any protection you get is what the breeder/store will give you.
If you're against anyone selling animals for a profit, that's fine. Just make sure you are consistent and rail against farmers too..who raise the food you eat.
We want to encourage the pet/people bond. We feel that our pets add a lot to the lives of our customers." |
