In nature I experienced -2F.
Few months ago at work we have a big freezer storage that is cooled to -80C (-112F). I walked in with jeans and long sleeve shirt just to try it out. My skin began burning after about 15 seconds, but skin heat loss was almost instantaneous. My jeans below knees was all tightened up and kept cold for good 5 min. 4 giant fans propelled -112F cold air into the room, so temperature is probably lower (as in wind/fan chill).

i spent a winter in Iowa, where one or two nights during the worst part the temperature got down to -30F. the wind chill was -60F or worse. i think this was a record winter; the authorities continually warned people not to go outside at all. you could die.
for the rest of the winter over a couple months, the temperature would get down to anywhere from 0F to -20F and the wind chill down as low as -30F to -40F or so.
I worked at a local Target third shift stocker, and rode a motorcycle into work at 11pm and left at 7am. I rode on snow and ice. It was only about 2 miles to work, but it really sucked. I bought the bike in the summer. At that time, though, I really wished I had bought a car.

I was skiing at Snowshoe one year when it was like -5 F, but the windchill was in the -30 F. You pretty had to ski down once, take the lift back up, and then go in and warm up.
I remember my face mask falling down to my neck by I didn't know it because it was so cold. My stepdad looked over at me and saw that my nose had turned black. We skied quickly down to the little cabin at the base of the run and had ski patrol make me some hot chocolate and let my nose get back to normal before heading back up.
I could have lost my nose to frost bite!! 1/21/2011 11:52:13 AM |

The coldest temperature I've experienced was in 2006 at Killington, VT. Around 6pm the first night of our trip there it was -14°F. Going outside to get firewood was a bitch, lol. I'm not sure how much colder it got overnight, but it was single digits the following morning when we started skiing.
The coldest wind chill I think I've experienced was -40-30°F at Snowshoe, WV back around 2002. In the middle of the day it was only 0°F and while sunny that wind was a bitch. I think I had to go inside every 45 minutes or so to warm up. Snowshoe's a pretty damn cold place. It's almost always colder there than my trips to the Rockies/Sierras, altitude be damned I guess.
I always find it rather humorous to ski all day with a water bottle in your jacket pocket and then after a while you pull it out and it's frozen solid

^^^Maybe he's being completely honest. It's just hard to believe. That's 200°F degrees below room temperature. It's 100°F below what anybody else is claiming in this thread. Annoyingly, I can't find a frostbite calculator that will go below -50°F, but at that temp and wind speed 30km/hr, you're looking at frostbite within 3 minutes. It's probably seconds at -112°F. I mean, damn, how would you even operate a freezer at that temperature?
Also, the whole fan thing. A heating system trying to maintain room temperature could be putting out air that is over 100°F at the vent, right? That doesn't mean it's 100°F in the room being heated. 1/21/2011 4:45:39 PM |

near Pittsburgh, PA: it got down to something ridiculous like -15 F at night one winter when I was in my teens. We had a bitch of a time keeping the horses' water buckets clear- after that my barn got electric heaters. School was canceled because of the temperatures.

Walk in freezer at a cafteria for me as well, probably -2 or something. I actually tried mopping it, that obviously didn't work out too well.

Just out of curiosity did you even attempt to google -80C freeze /cold room storage? They are pretty standard equipment in pharmaceutical industry.
Here are few that go to -86C
http://www.nuaire.com/ultralow-freezers/
http://www.nuaire.com/glacier/9668/brochure.pdf
They are either typical lab freezers or if larger storage is needed there are companies out there that assemble 4 insulated walls in form of large storage room and attach a cooling unit to it.1/21/2011 9:28:12 PM |

We have several -80C freezers in our lab as well, so it's very realistic to operate them at such low temperatures
I regularly stick my hands near liquid nitrogen (for quick-freezing vials before placing them on a lyophilizer), that's a little chilly as well1/21/2011 10:25:10 PM |

^ Yeah same here... I poured about a teaspoon of liquid nitrogen into my bare hand as a sophomore in a physics class
Prof brought liquid N to class and did a few cool things... then I was like, can I pour it into my hand? He is like, that's not advisable, and I wouldn't be responsible if something happened. I was like, cool, let me do it!
I poured it into my right hand, and it felt like mercury in how it would stick together and roll around in my cupped palm. I moved my hand left and right quickly a few times for a few seconds (so it wasn't touching the same place the whole time), and then I dropped it on the floor. It was boiling when it was in my hand.
At the end of class, the prof poured the remaining liquid N into the hallway outside the class, but not in the middle of the hallway, but along the walls on both sides. It bubbled as it rolled down the hallway and disappeared after a few meters. 1/22/2011 7:19:09 AM |
