I've got an 08 duramax and I want to do some upgrades in the next year. I'm thinking intake, exhaust, and chip. Anything else? Also, where is the best place to have said upgrades done? 1/21/2011 12:58:30 PM |

Just get intake kit, an Edge, and an 6 inch exhaust like everyone else. 1/21/2011 2:39:29 PM |

go there, read, read some more, and dont post stupid shit. You'll learn everything that TWW could never offer regarding a duramax.
BTW,
basic tuner/intake/DPF delete is good for 445whp on the LMM. I can post a video of the dyno run if need be.

Put stacks on it like every other fucking moron. And mount the toolbox in a retarded location so it defeats the purpose of having a truck. 1/22/2011 7:19:55 AM |

The garage has never really been a DIESEL oriented place, so i suggested a tried and true location for information.... That and i was hoping psi would take a crack back at me since he has a dmax.
BUT:

i got to reading some of the stuff on those sites and they were all talking about rebuilding transmissions and stuff. I dont need to tear out a transmission due to 298908 hp. i just want a little boost and maybe be a little more fuel efficient. 1/25/2011 3:45:02 PM |

you must qualify with street diesels....
your duramax ain't got shit on a 2700kw cummins generator :-) (which is trumped by cat's 3100kw) 1/25/2011 4:14:23 PM |

Intake, Edge tuner (or whichever), and DPF delete (if you can swing dealing with getting it inspected).
Dont worry about the transmission, and in fact with ~400whp you should be fine. Transmissions start to let loose with boosted 4wd launches, lots of multi-shift powerbraking, etc. Also, most of the tuners have 'levels' that you can turn up & down to suit your needs. My friend did this exact thing when he laid down the 445whp last summer.1/25/2011 4:49:01 PM |

You do want to be careful with the Allison on the 3-4 and up shift if you're making over 400hp.1/25/2011 7:39:58 PM |

good to know - is this a slowly degrading process or is it an immediate part failure?

I got a place for inspection(well my windows are a touch too dark and they pass it so I am assuming the delete will too).
Can you post some links of said items? 1/26/2011 9:30:10 AM |

^^it's such a huge drop in rpm going into fourth that it just wears heavily on the clutch pack and will begin to slip. if the tcm detects a shift outside the normal shift duration it'll throw the transmission into limp mode. limp mode is the first sign of issues and usually once a limp condition has occurred it won't be long before a rebuild is in order. the transmissions that have problems are usually caused by constant beating which is no different than any other modified vehicle. i'm putting down 418 and haven't had any issues but i'm also careful with mine. i hardly get on it and when i do i usually ease up before going into 4th. i'm actually planning on upgrading the clutch packs in the future so i can safely add more power. i just want to hit the 500 mark so i can have a low 13's truck just for the hell of it and to say my truck is faster in the 1/4 than my nsx (13.41 @ 104).
^if you plan on running a 90+ hp programmer i recommend either driving it carefully i.e. drive it like i do or adding a transgo jr. shift kit. the shift kit won't make the transmission stronger so don't think you can drive it like you stole it everyday. it will, however, increase the line pressure resulting in firmer shifts which means less clutch slippage. the kit will increase the longevity of the clutch packs as long as you drive it sensibly. the kit costs ~$130 and doesn't seem to be a difficult install that can be done yourself if you have the general knowledge of r&r and have hand tools. i know shevais has installed the kit and i believe he did it himself so he might be able to give you pointers. there is a nice write-up on the install in the link below but i think you have to be a member to either see the link or view the pictures. since you own a dmax i recommend joining the site anyways.

I can't believe that Allison makes such weak street transmissions. How long till diesels go HD DSG??
i'm betting it will be soon. 1/26/2011 12:00:57 PM |

actually they make really good transmissions. any drivetrain is going to problems if you make more power than stock, don't upgrade the rest, and drive the shit out of it. 1/26/2011 12:03:11 PM |
