How much does this usually cost at a vet? I just called for a quote at the vet closest to my place and they said it was $316 to neuter a dog That seems awfully high to me. 1/28/2011 1:31:13 PM |

I'm not sure on exact pricing but that definitely sounds reasonable. We had our dog neutered about a year ago and I remember it being $400+. 1/28/2011 1:38:04 PM |

Damn, I don't remember the last time we fixed an animal it costing nearly that much. Guess I'll just make an appointment with the SPCA 1/28/2011 1:39:53 PM |

^ Yeah that's what I'm going to do. I thought it was bad enough paying $250 to spay my cats overseas lol. 1/28/2011 1:53:09 PM |

more expensive to spay b'c it's a more involved procedure...
i just had my dog neutered...paid for painkillers and the bloodwork and it was about $270...I think the surgery itself was like $175 or so
but i live in fayetteville so this probably doesn't help you

The local SPCA gave me a $75 coupon to get my dog neutered (meaning that a local vet would do the neutering for $75 once he was old enough). 1/28/2011 2:14:30 PM |

Our little puppy has something called cherry eye, so her spay and cherry eye surgery is probably going to set us back $750. damned dogs. 1/28/2011 2:17:06 PM |

We used the Pet Overpopulation Patrol mobile clinic to neuter one of our cats. We were extremely happy with their services.
Dogs up to 60 pounds are $95 and it includes a physical exam, rabies vaccine, and a distemper/parvo vaccine. If you want to add any other vaccines or parasite control, you can.

it's $60 to neuter a cat at my vet. $40 on clinic days. iirc dog neuter was $80. vet in bfe ftw
we did the spca voucher w/ our female cat about 8 years ago. that worked really well. it was like $70 & we went to glenwood animal hospital, has a different name now.

go to the spca website
you can go to the saving lives spay and neuter clinic. its like $60 to neuter/spay a dog.
or you can buy a voucher through them if you make <50K a year and its like $57 to use at a list of area vets.
http://www.spcawake.org/site/PageServer?pagename=We_believe
it can take WEEKS or months to get an appt so call ASAP even if you aren't ready for the spay/neuter.
i had both my dog and cat neutered at the saving lives spay and neuter clinic at the spca....includes rabies shot and meds to take home. for my other cat, i used their voucher program and took her to one of the vets on the list. no problems with either option. but i will say the saving lives spay and neuter clinic takes like 3 months to book an appt, so you have to call ASAP.
edit: they will test for heart murmurs and stuff and then ask you if you want to proceed with surgery if they find one or not when you drop off your pet. i was worried about not getting enough pain meds and stuff, but both of my pets did fine and seemed to have enough meds. they were basically zonked out for a day or so after the surgery. def not happy and acting like babies, but they didn't seem to be in pain.

Females are more expensive than males because there is a lot more work to it. And depending on what you pay, at the extremes, makes the difference between whether or not pets get enough pain meds, whether or not the surgeon has a tech assisting them, whether or not they have access to the best monitoring and breathing equipment for while the pet is knocked out which can be important with the risk of death associated with anesthesia.
It never hurts to shop around, but its also good to ask about the details, because the very cheapest of options might be cheap for a reason.
(didn't really read thread responses, so I'm not knocking or encouraging any specific option anyone has suggested)
