you've fire extinguished a beer and/or liquor to make it cold faster. Also, if you didn't care and drank it anyway.

This.

I assure you that the guy who wakes up, rolls over, and bucks half a pint of vodka or a room temperature 8 hour old mixed drink that has gone flat and been watered down by melted ice doesn't care what color the mountains on a can of Coors light are.

Thank God. I'm not a real alcoholic.

My beer and liquor have to be ice cold. And not diluted.

Alcoholics drink mouthwash in a pinch. I'm sure they don't care about the temperature of their beer.

I've always had a difficult time pinning down the line where one becomes an alcoholic. You take one test, and it won't call you addicted unless you wake up every morning with the shakes and routinely drink in the shower. You take another test (that I suspect was generated by Mormons) and it says you're an alcoholic if you've ever looked forward to drinking or had a drink to relieve stress.

My main rule is that I don't ever start drinking before 5 PM unless it's a special occasion. And the occasion does have to be "special" and not just "Tuesday."

there is no physiological definition or medical diagnosis for "alcoholic", not even in the DSM IV ... it's a totally self determined label.

the only medical diagnosis is "alcohol dependence", but most self-described alcoholics are not (or are no longer) alcohol dependent, in a clinical sense. it's more like a spiritual thing.

^^ It's kind of funny that you mention the 5:00 pm rule. It's actually really common for people with an alcohol problem to make a bunch of rules to govern their drinking; thinking that it will prevent their alcohol abuse from escalating to whatever they define as real alcoholism.

It usually starts with things like "I'll only drink on weekends." You can be alcohol dependent and only drink on weekends. Ultimately, if you're miserable Monday through Thursday and then you have a blow out every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday you're still drinking over 40% of the days in a week. The "rules" can get more and more lax over time and people can always find a reason to create an exception when they really want to drink.

Also, there are many alcoholics who don't drink as soon as they wake up. If you are used to drinking at 6:00 pm every day your withdrawal symptoms won't start until a few hours after you miss your normal start time.

I'm not saying this applies to you, but it's something to think about. Seeing a few people who are close to you go through alcoholism and hearing their experiences can really open your eyes to your own seemingly harmless actions.

Skack --

The 5:00 PM rule mostly came about from living with people who would just start drinking whenever, including at times when I wasn't completely comfortable with it. Rather than come up with a different excuse every time for why I didn't want to drink with them, I just enacted a 5:00 PM start time. They'd still grumble, but even at the worst of my unemployment I never got myself into a situation where I was used to drinking in the middle of the day -- which would have been problematic when I went back to school or got a job.

^^Haha, good point (and probably one that reinforces Skack's)...when I say "drinking" I mean drinking. A beer with lunch is certainly not out of the question.

I fully understand and I definitely don't think it applies to everyone. It's just a common pattern. As Joe mentioned; alcoholism is pretty much impossible to define and those who try to define it use a different set of rules.

The only time I've really been concerned is when I started drinking more traveling. As in, I have some time, am bored and alone, and I can pay $Texas for inebriation? FUCK YES! Nah man, nah. Willingly getting raped at airport/hotel bars is not my most prideful accomplishment. In the context of alcoholism I think it's worth looking at whether you're drinking so much due to feeling you need it or just because you can. Boredom is a hell of a drug.
