Yea, fuck Windows and fuck you Noen.

I have dealt with the at times shitty client on OneDrive and happily paid for Office 365 account, but what a way to screw users like me who loved the service and are using a more than 1TB as we are completely fucked by this.

And to use the excuse that a few people who are probably using the storage system in a wildly illegal and inappropriate manner to restrict even the basic 15GB storage down to 5GB is complete horseshit.

I am dumping my Office 365 family account because of this. Fuck yourself.

For everybody else who doesn't know what I'm bitching about:

This OneDrive decision has me completely confused, it makes zero sense to me and damages something that was only starting to receive some notice and good press

If you are using it for a legit purpose (aka not warehousing pirated content), send me a PM and I'll find a way to get you to someone on the OneDrive team. People who are using the storage legitimately should get some kind of exemption IMO, and at worst your voice should be heard. I think it was stupid how we handled it (which is unfortunately seemingly typical at this point), and there are other ways to have dealt with the problem.

That said, it hasn't actually been unlimited ever, that was all marketing bullshit from the beginning.

Totally fucking stupid.

Yes, I am using it for completely legitimate purposes. In addition to documents, spreadsheets, work shit, etc. I use it as a way to backup/share my photos, giving me access to them everywhere and an offsite disaster backup that syncs to an external hard drive on my desktop at work. I am currently at 2.7TB and slowly growing but it is nothing illegal or even inappropriate, and is really is an elegantly simple solution for my needs. I don't have enough content in my mind to go with a NAS solution, but I really don't see anything else on the market that will give me the capability that OneDrive does. Google Drive is the next best option but once you go over a TB they charge $99.99/month for 10TB, which I am nowhere near and would take many years to even approach!

One other thing I did think is awesome is that OneDrive makes my images text searchable. I tag my photos with relevant information but I love that it can actually scan the text in the image, extract that, and make it searchable!

My OneDrive is now officially locked as I am at 3.5 TB, which is 2.5 TB over the limit. I am cancelling my 365 account and switching to Amazon unlimited storage at half the price.

I give Microsoft a lot of props for Windows 10. It is a quality product. 10/10 on stability and functionality.

I rarely use MS Office for anything anymore. I am still using "the ultimate steal" student edition from 2007 and it meets my needs.

I have never even tried OneDrive. I have upgraded storage in my personal Gmail account. I do not have many bulky files to store other than photos and so far Google has done an amazing job keeping those safe.

I absolutely LOATHED Outlook. It may be better now than it was..I would not know. My company uses Google Apps. My personal business e-mail is in Google Apps too.

Not sure what other products Microsoft has? The phone OS was a total flop way too late to the party and nothing innovative about it.

Not sure what the next big thing from MS could be. Their cloud stuff has always been lacking and they think it is worth more $ than it is. Maybe they should buy Canva and dump some $texas into making it better and bigger. There is really no great cloud based graphic design tool. They could strike at Google Apps/Suite with a really good cloud based office suite that is free or cheap. That is going to be hard to do when they have not even mastered spam filtering however.

Apple back on top by market cap. Thanks to Microsoft for bailing them out back in 1997 with a $150 million investment.

Let’s be clear here, I’m no Microsoft fan, but this isn’t a Microsoft problem. Crowdstrike somehow pushed a faulty .sys file that is f’ing up Windows servers across the globe. Spent half the morning on calls because of this.

Microsoft just happens to be a very large customer of Crowdstrike, so a lot of their internal systems hosting cloud apps/AAS were impacted.

But hey, my Linux systems?? Right as rain

If I'm not wrong, most "backend servers" (I don't really know the term, but what I mean is those that receive/store data) are custom linux stuff or something, right? I remember reading that somewhere when I was more into that stuff

the really interesting plot twist here is MS claiming this is a result of EU sanctions that forced them to keep 3rd party kernel/driver access open, something they wanted to limit in future versions of windows at the time of the settlement (09). seems like bullshit, because how would non-whql drivers ever work? but there's a little bit of truth in there

I knew I was right for hating the EU! (not in terms of whether it should exist or not, I just don't like them)
