Think Big, Think Small, Think Beyond.
HP webOS 2.1 is here! Along with it's introduction are new devices, a tiny phone, a larger Pre, and a tablet. This is a good day. Hopefully they get the devices out very soon!

Yeah, this is pretty outstanding, the interaction between webOS devices is like butter. I'm stoked! 2/9/2011 2:16:50 PM |

This kind of interaction where a phone and a tablet coexist seamlessly is what I've been looking for. Whoever nails it down will get my dollars, and I will switch carriers to make it happen if necessary. Also, I'm not paying for 2 data connections, nor am I paying for wifi jazz. Bluetooth->phone->network. I'm not going anywhere without my phone, use it's freaking data connection without having to broadcast a wifi signal to all 500 people in the airport.
But the ability to get tired of looking at something on my little phone screen and seamlessly switch to the tablet and keep doing the same thing is what i freaking need.
Blackberry playbook also seems to be gravitating to this way too - the phone/tablet synergy is the only real way to topple apple and galaxy tab at this point in the game. 2/9/2011 2:41:38 PM |

yeah, I always thought WebOS was the best UI and had a ton of potential but just didn't have the hardware to back it up but it looks like it's going in the right direction now that HP has control 2/9/2011 2:52:38 PM |

I love webOS. As a recent palm pre user, I'm pretty excited for them to grow. If I do ever feel the need for a tablet, this HP one is my leading choice. 2/9/2011 9:47:51 PM |

I wish. It's time to upgrade my phone, time to buy a tablet, and apparently time to be patient just a bit longer.
I may or may not be in the EAP and may or may not be looking forward to playing with webOS 3.0 SDK soon.

I hope they've done some major work since the pre. That was a huge let down for me...
The biggest issue I see with all these new devices isn't that they cant do all these amazing things. Its that they can't really multi-task well because of hardware that can't keep up with what the software is trying to do. And when it is struggling to do all these things it KILLS the battery. With my pre 1 and with the Epic I had they both had lots of potential but when you wanted to use something it would kill your battery and bring the phone to a crawl and lag at everything it did.
I wish they would make a device that could do certain things and then test it and make sure it could keep up with the promises it makes. I hope they can figure that out before they try and make it do even more. 2/10/2011 1:51:07 PM |

unlike Symbian, this OS was showing lots of promise. i would have switched to webOS before Android. RIP.

So it's only the HP hardare that's being discontinued. There si a hope that someone else picks up the OS.

Windows Phone 7 will be around for a long, long time. What you're seeing in that line is just people leaving Windows Mobile 6.5.

there were people still using it recently?
^^^ also why is there no spike or surge in iOS share around the time Verizon started offering the CDMA iPhone that everyone so eagerly anticipated supposedly?

People are loyal to operating systems they like (See also: webOS) and WM6.5 had a huge smartphone marketshare back in the day. They were still releasing WM phones well into 2009 as well.

Because most people who really wanted iPhones already had them.

When Nokia drops Symbian completely and switches to WP7 they will probably get a huge boost overseas. Especially if the rumors of a coming WP7 build for inexpensive phones is true. 8/19/2011 11:58:35 AM |

so they're open source now. I really doubt companies like LG, Samsung, Asus, Motorola, etc who have already produced hardware/platforms around Android are going to pick it up.

OPEN SOURCED!
Awesome.
http://www.precentral.net/hp-open-source-webos-no-hardware-plans-or-partners-announced
Quote : | "HP today announced their plans to contribute the webOS operating system to the open source community. While HP still has not announced any plans for new webOS devices, they are committing to furthering the development of the webOS platform through collaboration with open source developers. In today’s press statement HP CEO Meg Whitman said that by open sourcing webOS, “HP unleashes the creativity of the open source community to advance a new generation of applications and devices.”
HP plans to make the underlying code of webOS available as part of an open source license, allowing anybody from a homebrew developer to a manufacturer to pick it up and make their own enhancements and versions. HP will also “engage the open source community” about the rules of the webOS open source project, and laying out a few promises of their own.
The goal of the project is to accelerate the open development of the webOS platform HP will be an active participant and investor in the project Good, transparent and inclusive governance to avoid fragmentation Software will be provided as a pure open source project
HP also intends to contribute the Enyo application framework to the open source community in the near future. So at least that will have the opportunity to live on.
Notably absent from the press release is any mention of hardware, either from HP or possible partners. The open sourcing of webOS brings to a close months of speculation and hand-wringing about what HP would do with the operating system after former CEO Leo Apotheker cancelled hardware development. It’s clear that HP’s conclusion was that it would cost too much for them to try hardware on their own again, while simultaneously they were unable to find a suitor willing to meet HP’s price and conditions for a sale of webOS." |

Quote : | "Lastly, there’s something interesting we’ve observed with the big player in the open source mobile space. That’s Android, by the way. What we’ve noticed are lawsuits over patents. HP told us that they intend to hold on to their patents and will use them to protect developers using webOS. Considering the foundational mobile device patents that HP holds, such as"Integrated Handheld Computing and Telephony System and Services," i.e. “smartphone”, HP shouldn’t have much difficulty defending webOS from the Apples, Samsungs, and Motorolas of the world." |
http://www.precentral.net/whitman-hp-will-make-new-webos-tablets-eventually-not-smartphones
Quote : | "While all of the official verbiage on the announcement was very careful to avoid any mention of hardware from HP or any other manufacturer, The Verge asked pointedly if HP had any intentions on making new webOS hardware. Said Whitman:
“The answer to that is yes but what I can't tell you is whether that will be in 2012 or not. But we will use webOS in new hardware, but it's just going to take us a little longer to reorganize the team in a quite different direction than we've been taking it in the past.”" |
