Someone plz educate me on current processor/mobos or a better place to buy a pre-built comp

What's your application? If you're going for something that benefits greatly from multiple cores AMD seems to have the cost/core locked down pretty solid. However if you stuff is only single threaded, the "power boost" in the i-series processors dynamically overclocks a single core to speed up those single threaded boys.

Of course if you're doing work in CS5 it won't matter - save your pennies for a fast CUDA supporting card.

For gaming it's also kinda a boon - save cash on the processor and dump it into RAM and graphics cards.

Go to newegg and sort by best sellers or highest rating. Take a look at the top few results and start your research there.

Easily achieved 4 GHz with my i7 Bloomfield and a Cooler Master v8 (after-market air based cooler, but only $55). Rock solid blistering performance, very happy with the i7. Power boot button to internet browsing in under 20 seconds (and that's with a plain old 7200 rpm drive, too).

Motherboard is an eVGA x58 SLI. BIOS is great. Very happy with it as well. Maybe there are better mobo companies; I just bought the one that was bundled on special with my processor that week from newegg.

AMD quad core 900 series or hex core 1000 series. 890gx motherboard, 58xx or 460 fermi. 16gb of ddr 1333. disk is on your preference/workload.

Intel shit the bed on the latest sandy bridge chipsets. But they will have a new, and hopefully fixed, batch of chips and associated mobo's coming out this summer. Seing them in action before they got yanked made me a believer. I would wait a bit and budget around 1400 and build a bitching all around machine.

I used to be in the whole "build your own computer" crew. I honestly used to care and sit there and overclock and try to eek a couple more MHz and a few more points in 3DMark.

Then I realized what I value more is my computer not sounding like a goddamn wind turbine. If you're not going to overclock it, you might as well buy a Dell because the markup (at least on the computer I got) was minimal/nothing and it's just not worth the hassle.

speaking of storage, does anyone make a decently priced home nas type deal you can just fill full of disk. kind of like windows home server but not a full pc or a drobo but not flaky and slow?

If you need a home NAS the readyNAS line has been awesome for me. I love my Drobo too - but unless it's directly connected or you drop $2000 it'll be way slower than the comparable netgear.
