Quote : | "The word incubus means to lie on and it was believed that any heavy feeling in bed, such as a weight pressing down on your chest, especially accompanied by nightmares, was a sure sign that an incubus had attempted to have nocturnal intercourse with you.
Given the religious fervor of the middle ages, it's not altogether surprising that the idea of a demon lover was believed to account for this phenomenon." |

though i believe incubus is the source and originally referenced both male and female demons...it was only later than "incubus" and "succubus" become terms to refer to demons of different sexes

^^^ you're arguing some semantic distinction of latin words, where latin didn't even exist when teh concepts of demonic seduction was first described in ancient semitic literature.
theres always been tales of the succubi attempting to destroy virtuous men. incubi were rarely considered until the middle ages' increased fascination with accusing women to be witches (and laying with incubi)
Quote : | " According to Zohar and the Alphabet of Ben Sira, Lilith was Adam's first wife who later became a succubus. She left Adam and refused to return to the Garden of Eden after she mated with archangel Samael. In Zoharistic Kabbalah, there were four succubi who mated with archangel Samael. They were four original queens of the demons Lilith, Agrat Bat Mahlat, Naamah, and Eisheth Zenunim. In later folklore, a succubus took the form of a siren." |

uh...of course i am...as a response to:
Quote : | "incubus = demon penis succubus = demon vagina" |
which are words of latin origin
your first point is spot on...i am indeed using common sense
your second point is irrelevant because, as you've noted, i'm specifically referring to the origin of the aforementioned words themselves2/17/2011 3:31:12 PM |

^^Also in texts from the period there was copious reference to "acquiring the scent of noxious". Recently a team of scholars from the University ofEMCE have translated the turn-of-phrase as "gettin' dat stank". I don't know about you guys but this discovery has some pretty broad implications for the study of nocturnal intercourse.
