My sister got me rock climbing lessons and free 2 weeks (groupon) at TRC, so we finally made it out last Thursday. It was a lot of fun, like a cross between exercise and doing a puzzle. I definitely want to do it some more, and we are hoping to get out again this Thursday. Does anyone know how much it costs for a one time visit?

Make sure you rent climbing shoes. I see a lot of newbies wearing sneakers, but it's worth an extra $4 to be able to use your feet properly.

yeah I think my plan is to tape it up, then tape it to my ring finger and climb some easier stuff and see what happens. If its still there or starts to bother me more then I guess Ill have to take some time off

[Edited on April 14, 2011 at 1:14 PM. Reason : the worst part is Im not even sure what happened to it, hopefully I bounce back with a quickness]

Developing calluses for new sports is a bitch I can routinely do all the V0-V1+'s at TRC now though! Been there everyday since I started. If you see a tall guy sweating too much with an orange chalk bag and brown leather sportivas on that's prolly me

if you see a short girl falling, a lot, that's me.

anyway...
looking into buy a new pair of shoes. i have been wearing evolv elektra's for about a year now and have only been outside twice, but i'm thinking i may want to upgrade to something slightly more technical. i don't think my feet are ready for anything too assymetrical, plus i'm still not that great at climbing. i've heard that evolvs wear out pretty quickly so i'm thinking of going with la sportiva this time. any opinions?

so far i like the women's katana

I bought a pair of La Sportiva Tarantulas a few weeks ago and I love them. They have a slight downturn like the Katana, and I like the way the straps go in opposite directions. Haven't really stretched at all since I got them, either. I would definitely recommend Sportivas over Evolvs.

Yeah my thick feet wouldn't fit in any evolvs at all. Love my sportiva miuras.

So is anyone actually getting outside to climb? With the ski season winding down I'm thinking of getting to Yosemite next weekend (of course, I extend an invitation to ya'll to join me at anytime in the year if you want to fly out here) for my first weekend of real climbing.

Not really. I've taught and have climbed with many people with no trad climbing experience. For me it's all about getting out there and being on the rock. I'd rather spend my weekend teaching a newbie to climb & doing fun, easier stuff than sitting at home b/c of a lack of partner.

I usually do afternoons. Try to get there as early as I can so less kids (especially the indian preteen girls who like to sit on the downclimbs).

^^^we may try to do some bouldering/camping this summer. top rope trips are difficult because i don't have all the necessary equipment or skills. i was thinking about checking in with fox mountain guides or some people at trc i know who lead trips.

The Clymb has shoes for $30-45, harnesses for $30, chalk bags, belay devices, quickdraws, locking carabiners for $9 each this week.

If anyone's planning on climbing sometime next week, my girlfriend is looking for a climbing/belay partner. She's out of school, so she's free any time, though she's still a bit new.

Just drop me a line and I can get you in touch with her.

Yellow V3 with 3 holds total and the orange V2 at TRC that start on the lady bugs are now my fav climbs. They are both inside the boulder right next to each other and involve leaps to finish them. So fun.

Be careful with the dyno's if you've only been climbing for a month! Tendon injuries are not fun...just make sure you're all stretched out.

You don't have to dyno it. But being able to dyno would help with many problems.

Just more fun to leap! I usually just leap/muscle my way through shit cause i'm new haha. Few V3s and most V2s done at TRC after ~month. Lots of ibprofen and icing done in the beginning

Soo anyone else going to the New River Rendezvous? It's this weekend.

I'm in a day-long free clinic with Dan Hague (author of The Self Coached Climber). Pretty excited.

Gonna be there tomorrow; go every other day. Going on month long trip next week though to Thailand. Was thinking of grabbing some of those Metolius Rock Rings to keep my hands in shape while I'm there (plus gym and running). Any thoughts?

I own a pair of rock rings and they are cool, really versatile - you just need somewhere to hang them.

You should also check to see if there is climbing in Thailand. I know Railay (spelling?) beach is supposed to be a developing climbing destination

Well I know there are a lot of gyms in Bangkok, where I'll be for ~3 days, but then I'll be working most days in bum-fuck-nowhere Thailand for a month. Tried to google anything near it and closest I saw was 2 hours away

I hope I can actually boulder tonight. Last week the "meatheads" were crowding the new stuff at the front.

I never met anyone at TRC who wasn't nice as hell. Honestly, the people you call "meatheads" were the nicest out of anyone. Don't judge!

If you want to climb on a popular wall, you just have to be prepared to jump in.

If by nicest you mean they watch people struggle with a problem and then jump in and do it with ease while laughing amongst themselves, then yeah they sure are nice! Definitely not an isolated incident either

Must be a different crowd now...never had anything like that happen in the year I climbed at TRC.

i use the term "meathead" in a facetious manner. they definitely don't look like meatheads, but sometimes have the attitudes of them. i've gotten to know quite a few of the more experienced climbers since i'm there a lot and some are much nicer/more helpful than others. sometimes they'll be cheering me on as i finish a V1 and they go on to their V6, others act annoyed that i'm taking up space. oh well.

Yeah its a minority, but they can be real downers. Like today they had added a ton of new problems on the half overhang on back of boulder and there were like ~10 of us ranging from like V2-V8 skill level trying all the different ones, encouraging, helping, etc. Very good atmosphere.

would it be worth me listing what im looking to get rid of or would someone just bitch about it not being in classifieds?

You could post a link here and post it in classifieds. I personally don't care.

I didn't even go back there since the front overhang was fairly clear. There is a red V1 up there on the left I am struggling with, as well as that V2 inside with the ladybugs still kicking my ass. I finally got fed up and put my harness on to use the autobelays but some n00bs were all in my way after their intro class I wish they would put up another to the left of the lead cave.

Holy shit that purple V2 on the overhang up front ATE MY HANDS UP. It ended up ripping off like 4 calluses due to how roughly textured the holds were. Lathering on climb on all night tonight haha
