I have a security camera system installed on my house. The DVR system is in the attic. It needs an internet connection. Right now I have a 50 foot ethernet cable from my attic to the first floor of the house to my router.
I have an extra router a Belkin model # F5D8230-4 Version 1002. How would I convert it to a switch?
This would allow me to use it to get interent in my attic for the DVR system.
Thanks! 2/24/2011 9:34:56 PM |

If none of that works, just buy a switch and save the router. Aren't they < $10? 2/24/2011 9:52:42 PM |

... it already has a switch built in. Just plug your input into one of the LAN ports and the other 3 will be added to the LAN also. Ignore the WAN port, and at worst disable your DHCP. 2/24/2011 9:55:41 PM |

^ think I tired that before and it was still spitting out IP addresses. Just disable DHCP and give it a go. 2/24/2011 10:03:34 PM |

I think for that you'd have to flash the router with DD-WRT or some other firmware...and judging from this, your version isn't supported: http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database 2/24/2011 11:14:46 PM |

his is on the list. It does say you must replace the mini-pci card with a broadcom or other compatible card though. 2/24/2011 11:18:03 PM |

at that rate he should probably just buy a linksys/buffalo for $20 which is readily supported
but the way i'm reading this:

i don't see why he needs a bridge...seems like he already has a wired connection between the modem and the DVR system2/24/2011 11:21:00 PM |

Assuming you are speaking of wired, there is no functional difference between a bridge and a switch.2/25/2011 10:20:57 AM |

Just buy one. I converted an old wireless router I had to a switch, but in cases of power loss or iirc just randomly, it would reset itself and start wirelessly routing again, confusing almost every wifi device in my house. 2/25/2011 10:31:31 AM |

I want to be able to use the router to pickup a wireless signal from my current router and have a hard wire going to the DVR.
The 50 feet ethernet cord draping from the attic looks like shit. 2/25/2011 6:50:46 PM |
