"The Mitsubishi Evo is no more
Matt Prior
I’ve just spent an engaging half-hour in the company of Gayu Eusegi, Mitsubishi’s global product director.

Mostly we talked about the new Global Small Concept, which will be built in Thailand and sized somewhere between a Toyota Aygo and the Colt supermini. It’ll go on UK sale in 2012, effectively replacing the Colt in the line-up.

But also he told me some news, which seemed to surprise a few Mitsubishi Europe bods as much as it did me.

The Lancer Evolution X, Eusegi told me, will be the last Evo. “There is still a demand [for the car],” he said, “but we must stop.” Eyebrow up.

“Our influence now is EV technology,” Eusegi said, adding that the decision was a “policy change”.

It seems Mitsubishi, which is going to introduce eight full electric or hybrid cars by 2015, has decided its image is about lowering CO2, not making lurid replicas of rally cars that don’t go top-level rallying any more.

Eusegi said that customers would find it “easier to understand” what Mitsubishi was about if it was no longer in this motorsport-inspired market.

He seemed to put the rumoured diesel hybrid Evo replacement to bed, too. So the X will be the last Evolution model? “Yes. Maybe the world can change, and maybe someday we can do a motor race by electric vehicles,” said Eusegi. “Maybe then we can enter the market again.”

Until then, prepare yourselves for the end of an era."

Leave it to Mitsubishi to get rid of the one car that anybody actually wants from them these days. The problem with switching to a hybrid/electric fleet is that nobody is going to buy one made by Mitsubishi.

Hahaha, good riddance. The Evo X felt like complete shit to drive. Would much rather be in the seat of a STI of the same year.

I'm sure the EVO IX (more specifically the MR) will go the way of the ITR and be heralded and jacked up in value for many years to come.

Yeah. That's the point. Those are the only people that actually want Mitsubishis, and now Mitsu is kicking them to the curb.

Green is the new black in the auto industry. Considering that, at least in this country, Mitsu was largely ignored by the general population, it makes sense for them to try to reinvent themselves as the eco-conscious car company even if they do alienate a small but devoted segment of "car people" by killing the Evo. Bad for gearheads, yes--but I think it will be good for their bottom line.

Look at how many failed or barely successful hybrid and electric models have already littered the automotive grave yard. That is a highly risky strategy for a car company with limited resources. Going "all in" on this is a bad idea. If Mitsu can't build a decent and reliable "normal" car who's to say they won't screw up electrics and hybrids?

Chevy is trying to go "green" with the Volt and other spinoffs, but that doesn't mean they kill the Corvette and Camaro in the process.

Fucking stupid Mitsu. Only thing I've enjoyed from Mitsu since the MU-2.

Exactly.

The only way this can make sense is if Mitsu is losing $ on manufacturing evos.

Not really. They're probably banking on making more money by using those same resources to manufacture EVs instead of Evos.

well, that's what i said? if you are can better utilize your existing mfg plant to make more money, then you are losing money on mfg evos.

I read what you said to mean that it only makes sense if they're actually in the red on Evos.

Followup: Mitsubishi unconvincingly addresses Evo death rumors via Facebook *UPDATE

Will the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X be the last Evo ever built? Rumors to that extent were flying fast and furious across the Internet yesterday. Mitsubishi has decided to address these claims by way of a post on its Facebook page:

Quote :
"Further to some comments published in the press recently, production of the current Lancer Evolution continues as planned. As for its successor, regulations and market feedback will dictate its engineering package & architecture. Stay tuned."

So relax Evo fans, this answer should make you feel... well, actually, stay worried – the above statement really doesn't answer anything about the model's future.

*UPDATE: A slightly longer statement attributed to Mitsubishi on the subject has been found at http://www.twitlonger.com/show/93ftl0

Quote :
"On Thursday 3rd March 2011, @mitsucars said:

Production of the current Lancer Evolution continues as planned.
As for its successor, regulations and market feedback will dictate its engineering package & architecture.

MMC has kept the Lancer Evolution sedan evolving as the brand's highest performing model in the global market. However, as the market's needs and demands change, MMC is considering not advancing the Lancer Evolution concept in the same way as before, but to find a different direction for the Lancer Evolution model to evolve. The new direction, the technologies involved, and corresponding products will be disclosed in due course."

I think the Evo 8/9's resale was secured when it became clear Mitsubishi (or anybody else) wouldn't make a comparable car. I wouldn't mind buying an Evo, but I'm just not going to do it when they've refused to depreciate in the last 2 years. I may buy one when people realize it's a Mitsubishi... if that point ever comes. I mean look at the Type-R, those are still worth so much. :/

Mitsubishi Evo not dead - just getting neutered?

Quote :
"Following consumer backlash and a media fire storm, Mitsubishi is scrambling to explain comments made by a senior executive who stated the Evolution X would be the last Evo.

In an e-mail sent to Inside Line, the company said production of the current model would continue until it is phased out in 2012/2013. They added, "MMC [Mitsubishi Motor Corporation] has kept the Lancer Evolution sedan evolving as the brand's highest-performing model in the global market. However, as the market's needs and demands change, MMC is considering not advancing the Lancer Evolution concept in the same way as before, but to find a different direction for the Lancer Evolution model to evolve."

This seems to imply the next-generation Evo, if it retains that name, will be a hybrid or a plug-in hybrid. Details are limited, but Mitsubishi has already showcased a Lancer Evolution MIEV in 2005 [ http://www.worldcarfans.com/10508248659/mitsubishi-lancer-evolution-miev ]. While it will likely have little in common with the 2013/2014 model, the Evo MIEV had a lithium-ion battery and four electric motors that produced a combined maximum output of 200 kW (268 hp / 272 PS) and 2,072 Nm (1,528 lb-ft) of torque. This enabled the prototype to hit a top speed of 180 km/h (112 mph) and travel up to 250 km (155 miles) on a single charge."

So I'm in for another round of test driving Evos.

I don't know why...apparently the more miles you drive the faster the value goes up. The market on these things is more ridiculous than ever.

I obviously didn't feel that way. I've got no reason not to revisit, though. There is a GSR and a MR at the dealer here that I'll probably go mess around in today.

They're still outrageously priced though.

you guys will be a lot happier when you stop buying small, lightweight cars designed for activities you don't do and instead by larger, comfortable cars that are designed for things you do (large sedans or GT coups for eating up interstates for example)
