there's nothing quite like the feeling when you wake up in the morning feeling like p. diddy and realize your wallet is nowhere to be found.
especially when the bar you think you lost it at doesn't open until 6.
i've been frantically checking my SECU account online all morning to make sure no one is using my cards, haha.

heh, i do that with my phone sometimes.
so. it's 12:45pm. there are no charges on any of the accounts linked to the cards i had in my wallet. would it be rational to assume, at this point, someone either found it & turned it in or it's hiding somewhere in Misha's car/house?
if i were a criminal, i'd have already started using it by now.
or maybe someone found it, took the $20 in cash i had, and threw the wallet away.

This has happened to me several times. Small times criminals sometimes don't want to fuck with the hassle/probability of getting caught that comes with using stolen credit cards these days.3/4/2011 12:57:15 PM |

Wallet lost? Cancel cards immediately. Just because the cards were returned and there are no charges on it doesn't mean someone didn't write down the card info to use it electronically later, or swipe through a personal skimmer for future duplication. Of course it's unlikely to happen to you, but why risk it when getting a reissued card doesn't cost you anything? Don't be silly. Get a new card.
And even though you don't have charges on there now, you want to risk leaving your accounts open and gamble that someone won't use it maliciously? come on evan, you aren't that naive.
Ignore all of this if you canceled your cards...

this just seems a little over the top paranoid to me. i'd probably wait like a day to see if things turned up before freaking out. i mean...i guess i'm just crazy. anytime i've had any discrepancies with my cards, they've been resolved without incident immediately. plus my shit usually turns up somewhere i put it anyway (vs being out in the cold, big, bad world) so canceling is usually more of a hassle. i know you'll say having your shit stolen and used is also a hassle but...whatever.3/4/2011 7:49:14 PM |

It's called being responsible, not paranoid. If anything, put the card in a temp status so it's blocked but not reissued to give yourself time to find it. But don't just leave it open in the hopes that you'll find it, unless losing it around the house is not an atypical thing. It's your responsibilty as a cardholder to report your card missing as soon as it is lost. If I couldn't find it within 30 min to an hour of searching for it after realising its missing, I'd temp block it and keep looking. After a day, maybe two at most, then yes, cancel it and reissue. There's no reason to leave your hard earned monies open for the taking just because you can despute it and get it back if it is stolen.
I suppose I'm a bit more cynical about the issue since I work in a cardholder dept and deal with stuff. It royally sickens me to see the credit union eat some of these charges that are caused at the fault of the member's lack of responsiblity.3/4/2011 8:15:01 PM |

^^^^ well i don't think retracing my steps and waiting a day before canceling is irresponsible but thanks for the lecture. the only discrepancies i've ever had with my card have been businesses charging me incorrectly (or double. sometimes triple...stupid bars). anytime i've misplaced my card, it has turned up within a day. usually in the bottom of my purse or i've put it in a back pocket and forgotten it was there. one time i did cancel my card but then i found the old one. it had somehow gotten inside the lining of my purse
one time i accidentally left my wallet at helios and realized it driving home. went back, they had it, and i didn't cancel my cards for fear that someone looked at them and wrote the info down. i guess i'm just weird.

See, if only you were a mormon then you wouldnt be going to bars, and hence your wallet wouldnt be missing!
But JK, this happens to me like twice a year. Just cancel the cards and get a new license. After about the second time it becomes routine. 3/5/2011 1:31:42 AM |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you're misreading shmorri2's intent here. His stance only appears somewhat 'paranoid' to those who don't really know how credit card fraud works.
Think about it. Why steal at a gas pump or buy a bunch of bojangles before the cardholder locks the account when you can skim the card, return it to the owner and hit them for thousands once you clone it a month later and your fake ID matches the credentials exactly reducing your risk of getting caught 10 fold?
People pay for valid information and expect reimbursement when it comes up denied.

^^Thanks
About six months ago I misplaced my PayPal debit card. I was 85% sure that it was just lost somewhere in my house and the number was memorized and an integral part of my e-wallet so I just monitored the transactions for suspicious activity and decided it would eventually turn up.
About 45 minutes ago I get a auto generated email
Quote : | "Unfortunately, your PayPal Debit MasterCard BusinessCard® transaction didn't go through. Usually, that's because there wasn't enough money in your PayPal account to cover it.
Note: Money you've added to your PayPal account by debit or credit card is not available for withdrawal at ATMs. See other limitations.
Here are the details:
Amount: $1,890.52 USD
Merchant: Al Tayyar Travel Group " |
Luckily, my no questions asked auto-ACH limit is set to 1k so I was able to immediately deactivate the card. On 6/9 there were 2 authorizations to Verizon Wireless for 1.00ea that flew under my radar because I don't check paypal that often and especially not every temporary hold for a buck.
Now I'm tasked with figuring out where the leak was, whether the card was stolen electronically, skimmed and sold, or some other breech where they got the full CVV2 details.
Moral of the story is never to assume since you have your card/wallet back after an ambiguous amount of time and nothing sketch has happened that you shouldn't cancel the card. My stubbornness almost tied up a grand with PayPal (not the best company you want to be talking to about fraud protection and relief) all because I didn't feel like changing a few numbers in my keychain.
30 seconds vs hours and hours changing passwords and tracking down the fucks that tried to scam me.6/14/2011 4:42:23 PM |
