I don't fully understand how someone would find out that dried slow loris eyeballs are pleasant to smoke. There are a lot of steps between "hey, look at this cute little thing" and that I don't think I can wrap my mind around. (I mean I know it wasn't some dude two weeks ago who made this discovery, but still, it's weird to me) 3/9/2011 4:34:58 PM |

I love when she stops tickling it and it looks at her all "why did you stop?"
^A native somewhere, at some point in history, has probably tried to smoke/ingest every plant and animal in the jungle. 3/9/2011 4:45:41 PM |

I guess it's just the smoking an animal thing that is so odd to me. I can't think of any other animals or parts of animals that I know of that are smoked. 3/9/2011 4:49:17 PM |

Slow lorises can produce a toxin which they mix with their saliva to use as protection against enemies. The toxin is similar to the allergen in cat dander.[20] Loris bites cause a painful swelling, but the toxin is mild and not fatal. Cases of human death have been due to anaphylactic shock.[21]" |

These animals are on the endangered species list. How would they go about acquiring one? 3/9/2011 6:26:23 PM |

That guy appears to be a Russian mobster. They have one video of his beautiful wife riding with the loris in a limousine.
Seems to me that breeding these things in captivity and removing their poison glands would help ensure the species survives. They certainly aren't doing so hot in the wild. 3/9/2011 6:33:57 PM |

They're not doing so hot in the wild because humans poach the fuck out of them.......
I know they have a pretty big illegal animal trade in Russia. They also pull out the teeth of a slow loris before they sell it because they have a pretty wicked bite.3/10/2011 12:49:13 AM |

^^So? We cut our dogs balls off. Just as barbaric, but our dogs don't seem to mind in the long run.
They're failing in the wild due to lack of habitat. I can't fix that. It's already FUBARed. I could feed and breed one though.
Once again the hippies stand in the way of meaningful conservation work. 3/10/2011 9:48:05 AM |

They are mainly not doing so hot in the wild because of this:
Quote : | "Due to their long gestations, small litter sizes, low birth weights, long weaning times, and long gaps between births, slow loris populations have one of the slowest growth rates among mammals of similar size." |
Anmd then, there is the threat from humans, both indigenous, and outsiders:
Quote : | "Slow lorises are threatened by deforestation and the wildlife trade, including the exotic pet trade, traditional medicine, and bushmeat." |
Humans can be so horrible. This has some good [and sad] info:

And http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conservation_of_slow_lorises
^ "So?"? So this:
Quote : | "animal dealers either pull the front teeth with pliers or wire cutters or they cut them off with nail cutters.[14][25][28] This results in severe bleeding, which sometimes causes shock or death,[25] and frequently leads to dental infection, which is fatal in 90% of all cases" |

Dogs are domesticated animals. Comparing a pet dog to a wild animal on the endangered species list is laughable.
Their slow growth and reproductions wouldn't be near as big a problem if humans were removing from the wild and eating/grinding/smoking them......3/10/2011 6:41:44 PM |
