Whether or not you care for him, the NC State chapter of YAL is bringing Ron Paul to speak at the McKimmon Center on 3/28. Free/open to the public and whatnot.

Flame away.

I kind of want to go to ask him why the children of impoverished parents don't deserve an education.

but...he doesn't?

i'm sure he'd be ok with kindly benefactors plucking up dickensian ragamuffins from their parents and sending them to boarding school like in the 19th century. also, parents should be able to sell their children.

I want to ask him about how far off he thinks the NWO and the North American Union and the Amero are now.

^^ He absolutely doesn't. In his own words--if you don't believe me, watch the video--"Education is not a right." I can't fault him for idealogical inconsistency, because he doesn't have any (aside from abortion), but I find his stance despicable.

I'm sure he believes there's a Miss Havisham* around every corner, but that is a ludicrous point of view which is totally divorced from reality.

*I realize that Magwitch was Pip's actual benefactor, but Havisham is the more readily identifiable reference

lol @ "aside from abortion".

And also, you're taking a clip of him talking about higher education when I thought it was pretty safe to assume we were talking about primary. Even when he ran as a libertarian in 1988, he said it is completely unfeasible to privatize all schools, and that it was a waste of time to try and do so. Rather, we should deal with public school at the state and local level.

But that's ok...you can keep pinning him as an anarchist.

I wonder what the young libertarians think of the GOP pushing the government for more voting restrictions in NC costing NC millions? Or pushing their marriage amendment which may also cost millions and achieve nothing? And if Ron will comment on any of that?

^^ Why is secondary education fundamentally different from primary education? And, on that note, what secondary school costs $500 per semester?

Given the inefficiencies of what D.C. laughingly calls the `criminal justice system,' I think we can safely assume that 95 percent of the black males in that city are semi-criminal or entirely criminal.

Wow, what a great human and American.

Honestly, I will be in awe watching someone who cares about America speak in our little neighborhood of Raleigh.

North Carolina has always been known on the national stage as local yokals who can easily be used for political gain and then stepped all over (hell even our local congressman do it i.e. David Price).

Ron Paul is probably as close as I will ever come to meeting Jesus Christ.

If through some unimaginable circumstance it turns out to be Paul vs. Obama, I'll vote Obama. I think Ron Paul is out of touch with reality.

That said, there are a couple of things to address...

Quote :
"I can't fault him for idealogical inconsistency, because he doesn't have any (aside from abortion)"

I have tended, in recent years, towards being pro-choice...but I still see the pro-life point of view, and how it isn't necessarily anti-libertarian. Nothing in the libertarian view (small l or big L) says that you have to support one person killing another out of convenience. I'll say for the ten thousandth time that abortion has far more to do with where life is defined as beginning than it does with anything else.

Quote :
"Or pushing their marriage amendment which may also cost millions and achieve nothing?"

I'm opposed to the marriage bill, but I'm not sure it's in total opposition to libertarian principles...if, by virtue of their being in favor of equality, libs must be in favor of gay marriage and the like, then it's difficult to give them grounds to be opposed to other, more bizarre marriages. As a general principle such an argument is ludicrous, but if you approach it from the standpoint of, "Well, you've got to be against government intervention in marriage," then there's not a lot of room to discriminate.

okay im sorry for lumping the gays in with the religious.

Im pro gay actually, i just hate how they side with liberal scum.

Sucking another mans dick is really gross to me but i dont mind if other dudes do it as long as they dont pin me down or vote for obama scum.

He's one of the only politicians that actually is in touch with reality. There's hardly anyone talking about an exit strategy for this horrible financial situation we've been put in. You'll sooner vote to keep the status quo going for another four years rather than vote to deal with any long-term problems.

Quote :

I'm not sure what he'll be speaking on. Personally, it doesn't seem that wise to change up the voting laws now. I support a lot of major democratic reforms, but the voter ID thing doesn't solve much. Yeah, some people are cheating the system, it's hard to say how many, but it shouldn't be a priority when the budget is already messy.

The marriage amendment is obviously dumb.

To Grumpy's point, I believe you misunderstand what I'm saying. Its my understanding that most libertarians are generally against more and restrictive laws relating to marriage, especially as they start to tamper with the constitution, and that they oppose laws like DOMA whether at the national or state level. One can very easily oppose DOMA and oppose bills like this, without taking a stand on marriage, or while taking the stand that government should get out of marriage altogether. A libertarian or anyone of sound mind can oppose DOMA, and oppose legal recognitions of marriage to a toaster oven (I believe I heard the toaster slippery slope argument made in Maryland recently) without even an ounce of cognitive dissonance.

In fact the only libertarian I know of in our state General Assembly (who technically has an R by his name) is the only R I know of who has publicly taken a stance against the DOMA type constitutional marriage amendment. So I think that position is extremely libertarian friendly.

$10 to the first one to trigger an impassioned and expletive-filled 300 word response in this thread.

I suppose we could also rate ourselves based on who had the lowest posted words to response words ratio.

Oh, and I liked Ron Paul back when no one had heard of him, but now his fiscal conservative views are so mainstream.

you know, you could have just googled "secondary education" before posting that instead of revealing that you don't know that it's a synonym for middle or high school.

will there be a discussion of the ZOG and the NAFTA Superhighway?

IMO education isn't a right, but rather an entitlement that ought to be offered by any country that wishes to be considered "developing" or "developed"

How does it feel to be the guy that knowingly spreads misinformation? You'd never criticize someone else for doing the same, right?

So you read the newsletters from over two decades ago, most of which were written by others under the title "Ron Paul Survival Report" or whatever. You concluded that the statements were both racist (arguably, they weren’t, since blacks in Los Angelos at the time were much, much more likely to be criminals – a statistic often cited even by progressives in support of liberal policies) and written by Ron Paul.

Two decades later, when both parties wholeheartedly support a pro-corporatist, pro-military, anti-developing world economic and monetary policy, you will not support Ron Paul. You disregard the fact that Ron Paul cannot be found saying anything remotely racist outside of these newsletters, and in light of the dubious claim that he personally wrote those statements and the fact that he has stated that he bears responsibility for those statements, you ignore the reality that racism is the complete and total opposite of his stated philosophy.

Go ahead – support Obama in 2012. Why don’t you fly to Afghanistan yourself and murder some people? Why don’t you fly to North Africa and take food directly off of people’s table? Why don’t you send your wages directly to Goldman Sachs, since you want so badly for the corrupt banking system to stay intact? If you did even close to as much research on central banking and capital flows as you have on Ron Paul’s “racism," there’s absolutely no way you could come out supporting Obama if you’re a compassionate person. The United States is, and has been, shitting on the rest of the world. You can vote to end that trend, or you can vote to continue it. I know what side of history I’d rather be on.

Also, looks like you win 10 bucks.

That's $10 well-earned, lewisje.

Not a bad impassioned argument, either. There are going to be a lot of uncomfortable liberals when it comes time to support Obama again.
