I think its a personal matter for our Marines that we have to at least make some effort. Tripoli (in Libya) is in the Marine Corps Hymn after all
Quote : | " From the Halls of Montezuma, To the shores of Tripoli; We fight our country's battles In the air, on land, and sea; First to fight for right and freedom And to keep our honor clean: We are proud to claim the title Of United States Marine. " |
I am highly opposed to putting troops in there, we are spread thin as it is, but sending a few missiles at a psychotic tyrant's forces is OK with me.

What impact will this have on gas prices? $4 in 2 weeks?
1 tomahawk missile = $760,000
120 = $91,200,000
And America gets what out of bombing this country?

It was unanimous in the sense that there were no opposing votes, but not in the sense that all members of the Security Council approved it. The vote was 10-0, and among the abstentions were both Russia and China, who have veto power. 3/20/2011 5:10:38 PM |

Speaking of Russia...
http://ca.news.yahoo.com/putin-likens-u-n-libya-resolution-crusade-calls-20110321-052402-752.html
Quote : | "VOTKINSK, Russia (Reuters) - Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin Monday likened the U.N. Security Council resolution supporting military action in Libya to medieval calls for crusades.
Putin, in the first major remarks from a Russian leader since a coalition of Western countries began air strikes in Libya, said that Muammar Gaddafi's government fell short of democracy but added that did not justify military intervention.
"The resolution is defective and flawed," Putin told workers at a Russian ballistic missile factory. "It allows everything. It resembles medieval calls for crusades."
Putin said that interference in other countries' internal affairs has become a trend in U.S. foreign policy and that the events in Libya indicated that Russia should strengthen its own defense capabilities.
Russia, a veto-wielding permanent Security Council member, abstained from the vote Thursday in which the council authorized a no-fly zone over Libya and "all necessary measures" to protect civilians against Gaddafi's forces." |
Funny how Russia is all talk...in Russia, but they abstained from the vote when they really could have said something of consequence.
And of course China abstained, they didn't want to look hypocritical by stopping one government from slaughtering its people when China's own human rights are despicable.

Well, I think you answered your own question. Bombing the country will help the opposition win, and if that happens there's a chance that stability will return to the country -- and with it, our oil prices.
Assuming that stability does follow Kadhaffi's ouster and the oil starts flowing without fear of civil war, I expect the overall economic benefit to us will exceed $91 million dollars, which is a measly sum in terms of both military expenditure and our oil consumption. Plus, we get to stop a horrible murderer.
Quote : | "I don't care if a lot of jobs come from the military. We don't have the money and it's unnecessary to have 25% of our budget devoted to the military. It's just stupid." |
If those military jobs go away, unemployment goes up. Those newly jobless people won't be paying much in taxes, and they may go on government benefits that cost money. Hard to say which value is higher. At least with military spending we get cool guns, with medicare and social security we just get whiny old people.3/22/2011 1:26:58 PM |

We've lost like 3 F15-E's in their ~30 year existence. All (to my knowledge) were due to mechanical failure. You drive your car for 30 years and make sure to hit it's top speed once/week and see if something doesn't fall off when you're cruising across the desert.
Actually, it was probably the first time it had been authorized for military thrust in 5 years. That might have contributed.

^^And the planes probably average many hours of maintenance for every hour of flight. Pretty sure my car could handle it if I had a team of mechanics on that thing after every commute...
but that's why the fail rate is small. So yeah.
