I was at the game store yesterday checking stuff out and one game called shadowrun really caught my eye. the more I read about it, the cooler it sounds. Anyone else play it or other table top games they care to recommend? I've never played anything besides magic and milton bradley type shit.

but running around capping people in the streets was fun, and inflitrating heavy security buildings.

Shadowrun is a lot of fun with a good group, but it functions a lot differently than your standard d20 system. I'd suggest giving it a shot if you can get a group of 5-6 people to play. 1 GM and a group of 4-5 players would probably work out best for starting it. That way your group can cover most situations as long as its balanced, having everyone play cybernetic brawlers would leave you up a creek however.

Shadowrun is a decent rpg. I have not played the newest edition however. When I was playing it, I believe it was in 2nd edition. overall, worth playing but there are better RGPs out there.

What sort of stuff are you interested in. Was it the cyberpunk aspect of shadowrun that interested you? the post apocalyptic feel? The combination of magic and technology?

My all time favorite RPG is no longer in print but is available pretty dang cheap on ebay if you dont mind used stuff. Teenage mutant ninja turtles and other strangeness published by palladium games.

Seriously, let me know what sort of stuff you want to role play and I will likely have played it. I am a huge nerd and can probably give you a decent recommendation.

I haven't played Shadows over Camelot, but Settlers, Dominion, and Puerto Rico are all awesome games. Next time I'm in town, maybe we can play! Settlers of Catan is a good one to start with, it's similar to Risk but waaaaaay better.

My best friend of 25 years is into this stuff. Like REALLY into it. It's how he met his wife and practically all of his post-high school friends. He runs/participates in 4-5 weekly/biweekly games (Shadowrun, Vampire the Masquerade, DnD, 7th sea, several others) and has been bugging me for the last 10 years to come out and try it. Recently I started going to his biweekly Shadowrun game and I have to say it's kind of fun. It takes a while to get used to the extreme nerd factor and the fact that grown men and women are having full conversations with each other in character, but once you drop the "I'm too cool to be doing this" facade and join in, it's enjoyable.

general guide lines for living in a table top

1) never just walk though a door
2) check the room, then enter. Use an invisible minion, small drone, fiber-optic camera, scrying, sneaky as hell rogue, etc to look in check it out (varies depending on game, don't let the guy that rolls like crap scout).
3) look forward, left, right, up and down before entering
4) Always bring rope

This will save you at least 1 gruesome death per campaign, probably more

I play Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition every Sunday, and I am currently running Vampire: The Masquerade using Vampire: The Requiem rules on Thursday nights. Soon, we'll switch over to Aberrant on Thursdays, and I'll probably start a Mutants & Masterminds 3rd Edition game on Sunday when D&D ends. I love tabletop! I've been playing with a bunch of Wolf Webbers for, like, ten years now.

^^I'm really glad my friend doesn't run his game like that. Our games are usually more about planning and executing extractions or assassinations or something like that and not about stressing over every little rock ^in the corner. At least not his shadowrun games. I went to a couple of his DnD games and they were more meticulous like that, but that's one of the reasons I didn't keep going to them.

I am a huge fan of the cyberpunk mythos but I really liked that the game was grounded in reality, with a real landscape, somewhat plausible back story, etc. The deep fantasy mythology thing is kinda tired to me, especially after playing wow for 6 years. High technology was a big draw since it's so different from your typical element based magic stuff, though you still can't completely get away from the same old races in every game, at least with shadowrun

I DM a Gamma World (4e) campaign, but I also like miniature wargames. I picked up Ex Illis at last year's GenCon. I built a 100+miniature army, but the company that produces the game went bankrupt in February. I may take up Warmachine whenever this campaign ends.

I probably would have played D&D as a kid and loved it, but literally nobody in my school played (small country school).

A couple kids tried to get me into warhammer fantasy, but I wasn't about to drop over $9000 to build an army to play.

For the record, I didn't play D&D until I was 22 years old, and everyone I know who plays didn't start playing in regular games until they were college age.

While I consider myself a pretty easy-going DM, I don't like dealing with players under the age of 16. Kids are just too dumb, and get too emotionally invested in their characters.

I've wanted to get into tabletop RPGs for years. I'm mostly interested in the cyperpunk meets fantasy aspect of Shadowrun, but I think I'd enjoy playing just about anything with the friends that I have.

Loads of people play Shadowrun, though. They released a 4th edition in 2005, an Xbox 360 game in 2007, a 20th anniversary edition in 2009, they have a "living campaign" event in game stores (including Game Theory) called Missions, they're still publishing modules and sourcebooks, they're about to drop the Runner's Kit with a screen and all that...shit is vibrant!

My experience is such that kids have trouble keeping things from getting personal; its the difference between role-playing a frustrated character and actually getting angry when something bad happens to your PC. Thats what I meant by "emotional investment".

Immersion is great. I can tell how much fun someone is having by how immersed they are.

Settlers is always a great game in part because it's very accessible: I can teach someone who has never played the basics in one game. Dominion is one I've heard good things about but never played before.

i will play necromunda! havent played since probably 2004 though. still got all the original scenery from the boxed set and a bunch of unpainted minis. one painted orlock gang though.

@smoothcrim If you want a roleplaying game that gets away from those same fantasy races we are all familiar with try a different genre. maybe call of cthullhu (horror roleplaying in lovecraft's mythos) or feng shui (hong kong action movie roleplaying). if you want more suggestions let me know. I have unloaded a bunch of my roleplaying stuff over the years but could probably steer you in the right direction if you give me more info on what you want to be doing.

I cut my teeth on the old West End Games (Star Wars) and Palladium (Palladium Fantasy and TMNT) RPGs. From there I progressed to the White Wolf universe. From a game mechanics perspective I still like the White Wolf D10 based systems. I've never gotten into the D20 based games.

I've always been a table top board gamer. I've spent many a night waring over the Axis and Allies game board. I still like to play Advanced Civilization and Machiavelli. Settlers of Catan I still play often.

I play a tabletop based on the 40k universe called Deathwatch. It uses a percentile dice system as opposed to the D20 system. Also you are a fucking Space Marine..so it's hard to beat that.

I've also played Warhammer 40k for several years. Currently playing at a place in Cary called The Gamer's Armory. They specialize in board and war games and have an extensive game library if you want to play a game before you buy or are just looking for a way to kill time.

Heroscape FTW

They stopped making it a few years ago so to buy the sets now costs triple what it originally cost, but the boards and pieces are built to last. You make a new board every time and you can customize every game so really no two games are ever the same unless you want them to be. Kids can be surprisingly good at defeating an adult's strategy as well so it's really fun if it's grown-ups, kids, or both.
