i'd say here in america it goes against the grain to drink during the lunch hour; however, with saying that, i have done it and immediately wanted to take a nap after lunch and will never do it again unless i have the afternoon off.

its funny because we even have beer in the fridge but no one ever touches them. sometimes i wonder if they were put there as some kind of test.

One of my clients has beer on tap in the kitchen. Pretty sure it's just for happy hours and stuff like that, but it's still funny.

Personally I don't see anything wrong with this. It's about knowing whether a beer is going to affect you at work. I would sometimes drink a half pint with lunch at my previous job. I wouldn't have advertised this to my boss but it was one of those things everyone seemed to do but no one mentioned it.

It doesn't really affect me to where I can't do my work properly...but it affects me to where I say to myself, "fuck work, I'd rather keep drinking."

So I've done it and been fine, but I'd keep drinking instead of going back to work most of the time.

I'm pretty sure mine does too. It's been so many years since I signed the paperwork I don't really remember.

Must be one of those deals where they effectively punish everyone because a few people can't handle it rather than just dealing with the problem people.

I, personally, see nothing wrong with one or two at lunch. I've never been the type to order drinks when I'm eating out though, so it doesn't really affect me either way.

had 2 longhammer IPAs with lunch today, rally point has $2.50 pints every tuesday and half price wings so we've started going there every week.

i would take them up on that challenge. the last time i got breathalized was after 5 beers in couple hours and i blew a .02

i'm also interested in how various industries have different feelings on this. i'm more of a project manager than any kind of engineer and since we are a small company we have more of a "common sense" understanding when it comes to this. the only rule we have is against drinking while driving a company vehicle, but even this seems to be ignored during hockey season (not during work hours though)

I can certainly understand the ban when using a company car or interacting with clients (after drinking), but I see no harm in it when you're just going to be in the office and it's being one of those days. Or just a nice day that makes you want to have a beer with lunch. I don't normally drink with lunch any day of the week, but I can see the appeal.

It's fine! As long as you don't get "drunk" there's nothing wrong with it.

I don't see a problem with having a beer with lunch...especially on a nice day at a place w/outside seating.

Though I've also been guilty of starting with a beer and not going back to work

I drink enough beer to get a buzz, and if I get a buzz I ain't working.

But I can see how people who drink for the taste (haha) can do this.

There's nothing wrong with having 1-2 beers over lunch. I did it all the time when I lived in NYC. People in America are too uptight and too litigous.

And a cop can give you a ticket for driving under the influence of OTC cold medicine too, so what's the point in even bringing this up? Last time I checked you can take OTC cold medicine at work.
