It's okay to make money, but only if you be yourself doing it.

If you find a way to peddle shit music to the masses and get rich from it, that's awesome. Just don't expect to get much respect from real musicians. 4/7/2011 2:17:49 AM |

That's pretty much the definition of selling out. The only thing is that you can never go back to doing it like you did before.
I have no problem with bands I like becoming successful. What I hate is when they obviously change their sound to be more industry friendly.
For the record, I'd sell out in a heartbeat.4/7/2011 10:20:14 AM |

Very few starving artists in rock even get the chance to sell out.
It's usually when you're selling 10,000 copies hand-to-hand and another 100,000 through distributors that the record labels take interest.
Rap is a completely different story though. These guys get record contracts from a single without recording an album or ever performing live. 4/7/2011 10:25:52 AM |

How come when a group writes songs that are worth listening to people say they've "sold out"? Two words - Bon Jovi. Everyone called them sellouts because they wrote songs that people wanted to sing along to. Thirty years later they're the only hairband left, and their songs are still great. The same thing happened with Metalica. When they decided that "fast" wasn't the only criteria for making music they were called "sellouts". Despite the fact the "Nothing Else Matters" is epic.
There's a joke that, "Art without a market isn't art, it's therapy." There is a certain truth to it ...
P.S. - I love Green Day ...

I thought the only people who argued about bands selling out were elitist asshole music snobs (a rather pompous, self absorbed, and jealous lot...and untalented to boot) and highschool emo/punk shitheads.
If I had the chance to "sell out"...I'd be all over that like stink on shit. I can work on my own true creations in my own time...and reap the benefits of having the money to do what the hell I want. Ever hear of working to support your pastimes? Same thing.
In the grand scheme of things, is your opinion of me going to have a damn thing to do with my true character? Go fuck yourselves if you think that your opinion matters that much.
