here's a different truck, Wide Open Performance triples on a 12V cummins... afaik, it's intercooled between stages (not sure if it has water injection @ manifold.)

Black smoke indicates an excess of fuel, or at least incomplete burn due to insufficient dwell, insufficient turbulence, or dirty/fouled injector nozzles.You see all that smoke in the above videos...those engines are boosting hard, but with excess fuel. Does two things in moderation: gives you as much power as you can possibly get...and to a much lesser extent keeps EGTs down a little bit.

in a nutshell excessive black smoke represents incomplete combustion which is a byproduct of a shitty tune. those running EFI Live (which is now available for the CR Cummins) who spend their time writing the program have minimal smoke. this truck is diesel.

The urea injection simply takes the place of raw diesel fuel being injected into the cylinder on the exhaust stroke which purpose is to increase the egt's enough to burn off the diesel particulate filter.

In this case, urea acts as a Selective Catalytic Reduction agent to decrease NOx emissions below Tier 2 max levels. What's interesting is SCR has been used in reducing smokestack emissions of NOx in manufacturing and industry for some time now...of course, it's a lot easier at that scale of implementation than it is at the consumer level on vehicles.You'll still have a DPF (diesel particulate filter), which will still likely require post-combustion fuel injection periodically for regeneration.

i'm familiar with SCR and SnCR systems in electric generating plants. what i'm asking is can you just not put urea in the tank and bypass the low-level sensor that limits the truck's speed if the tank is empty.

(for work - off-highway diesel)I can't find the paper right now but the quotes below go along with what I remember...To meet emissions it has to monitor the level of Urea, monitor the quality, resist tampering, and cut power if everything's not working right.Sounds like a pain to deal with.--SCR uses a water-based solution containing urea. Urea is injected into a truck's exhaust, where it works with a catalyst in the aftertreatment system to break down nitrogen oxides - chemicals that contribute to the formation of smog in the atmosphere - into nitrogen and water vapor.--What happens if the DEF is not Replenished? The failure to refuel the DEF tank will cause the truck to exceed allowable NOx emissions. For this reason, EPA is requiring OEMs to ensure that there is a visual or audible warning that alerts the driver when the DEF tank is running low (i.e., less than 2.5% of the DEF tank capacity). Once the tank is empty a derating of engine power will occur and eventually the truck will be restricted to travel at a maximum speed of 5 mph.What happens if poor quality DEF is used? If the SCR system detects poor quality DEF that inhibits the system from reducing NOx to the levels mandated by EPA, a warning lamp or message will illuminate. If the driver fails to remedy the problem within 500 miles or 10 hours, the maximum available engine torque will be reduced by 25%. If the driver fails to remedy the problem within 1000 miles or 20 hours, the vehicle speed will be restricted to no more than 5 mph. more.a full weight truck @ ~6500# needs a fuckton of power to hit a 10.xx, something in the range of 850whp.for example, the tried and true 2nd gen dodge 12V, reg cab, long bed, 4x4, automatic:truck - $6000 good conditiontransmission - $7500Turbo setup - $3500- 5500, dependingengine - $2500 to $10k depending on level of buildthe rest - budget $5000 for who knows what......now throw in labor $$$$$$ if you dont do everythign yourselfYou can get a cheap dodge in the mid 11's for <$20k if you take some time and do everything yourself.[Edited on June 9, 2011 at 10:10 AM. got ya, i was wondering about the engine building part, headwork, cams and fancy bottom ends are where cars get $$$ well and fueling but nothing in comparison to a diesel on fueling.

yeah, you can get about 750whp worth of fuel from a standard p7100 pump for ~$1k. Bottom end is good for a lot of power, but guys usually go for cam/porting/valve work which in and of itself could go to $4k after all said and done. Serious intake porting requires the cast-in intake trough to be machined off, and then an intake has to be re-attached....That's one option for the 12V cummins, there are many available too.
