Lol

Not sure why you felt the need to quote the word won. It was pretty clear.

And being good at politics isn't a result of being in the House for a long time. There is a reason she's speaker. I'm still waiting on who you would prefer instead.

Lastly, watching adultswim trying to normalize Maduro is funny as fuck. Look I get that you have a boner for him because he's a socialist, but you need to dig a little deeper than that dude.

We've been actively intervening in their country for decades. Like it or not, Maduro is their democratically elected leader. Calling their opposition and telling him he should seize power is active intervention. Macron's approval rating is similar to Maduro's. Should we encourage an overthrow of the French government?

Trump & Bolton have said repeatedly that military action is on the table. I think it's pretty likely the fascists in Brazil would join, at least.

Do you really believe Trump, Pence, and Bolton would personally back a center-left coup? The National Assembly is pursuing an agenda of privatization and has criticized social services as "corrupt". It's the same old Chicago school Friedman-ite bullshit.

Dude, what? We ARE the position in Venezuela. Guaido would not have had the balls to declare himself president without US backing. He wouldn't be in this position had we not crippled their economy with sanctions and manipulation of oil prices. Look at who they're appointing as Special Envoy to Venezuela. It's right out in the fucking open. Absolutely disgusting.

Lol dude all I've said about Maduro is that he's their elected leader. There are a lot of world leaders who are bad (how about ours?), doesn't mean I believe they should be deposed and replaced with yet another puppet government.

"Several Venezuelan NGOs, such as Foro Penal Venezolano, Súmate, Voto Joven, the Venezuelan Electoral Observatory and the Citizen Electoral Network, expressed their concern over the irregularities of the electoral schedule, including the lack of the Constituent Assembly's competencies to summon the elections, impeding participation of opposition political parties, and the lack of time for standard electoral functions.[11]

Because of this, the United Nations human rights chief,[12][13] European Union,[14][15] the Organization of American States, the Lima Group[16] and countries such as Australia and the United States rejected the electoral process.[17][18] However, countries such as China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia, Syria, Turkey and others recognized the election result.[19]"

It's a little ripe for the US to be judging other countries for voter suppression and lack of democracy.

And its weird you are saying AS has a boner for communism/socialism but also loves Russia and NK.

I disagree. They still didn't get their wall money, and the beds thing was a losing issue for the Democrats - the GOP narrative of "they don't want us to arrest murderers!" was too strong to get around with some nuanced dance of "no we just don't want them to arrest some of the criminals." If it had gone to a shutdown over that, the Dems would lose that round.

As it is, they knew they were forcing Trump into a lose-lose situation. If he accepts the deal, he caves on the wall and Sean Hannity calls him a pussy. If he just rejects it, he causes another shutdown and plunges even lower in the polls. If he goes with the emergency, he sets himself up for failure in the courts and maybe real dissent from Republicans in Congress. It's a win - they give up nothing more than they've offered all along, and Trump gets one step closer to fracturing the GOP. The prospect of Donald having to veto Congressional opposition to the emergency is just too sweet.

How do you figure? The spending bill held the wall funding flat and reduced the number of beds, which I think is pretty damn good for a party that controls 1/2 of 1/3 of the government. What else did you want them to get? DACA? In the 3-week timeframe? Keep fucking dreaming.

No, they did about as well as could be hoped in their position.

And how do you figure it "endorsed and approved the Republican position?" Is anything short of absolute victory and the dismantling of ICE and the address of Donald Trump now to be construed as total defeat?

it endorses the republican position because it accepts the idea that we are actually in a border crisis when the reality is that we are not. it does basically nothing to change republican policy about immigration despite democrats being gifted the upper hand. if democrats cared about more than a political victory then not getting a full wall wouldn't be enough. with this deal republicans still get 55 miles of border wall, hundreds of millions for border security, additional customs and border patrol, no limits on ICE beds, etc...

and the icing on the cake is that trump may still get the one thing democrats stood firm on anyways

Until about 24 months ago, border security was a bipartisan issue, and had been for about 250 years. There is nothing in this bill that would indicate we are in a border "crisis", otherwise there would be full funding for the wall. Politically, this is not a "win" for Trump or the Republicans. And now that Trump has declared a state of emergency, this is a huge loss for the Republicans and the nation as a whole. Trump just got big timed by Pelosi.

there is nothing in the bill that indicates the truth that we are not in a border crisis, we basically got the status quo despite the democrats being given a huge advantage and position of power

^^Well, if your standard for success is the Democrats somehow "changing Republican policy," then there's nothing to talk about because you're a crazy person.

^LOL "position of power." You guys really don't get that your don't have power until you win. Right now, the Democrats have basically 1/6 won. And they've accomplished quite a feat with that regardless - they got a lot of what they wanted.

Quote :

They didn't give up anything on the wall, they let him keep what he was already going to get in terms of money - and they saddled it with restrictions.

CBP needs more resources. That agency does a lot of important work aside from stopping people crossing the border. The ports, especially, are in dire need of better security. This agreement helps with that - twice as much money goes to CBP port efforts as at border patrolling. (And for that matter, while I despise our immigration policy, I'm not opposed too guys watching the border and would just as soon they be will equipped).

The agreement does include a cap on ICE beds, though admittedly it looks like it isn't as airtight as could be hoped. Still, it is a cap, and a lower one than what Republicans had before.

If the bill made any indication of whether we are in a border "crisis", wouldn't it include the full $5BB original requested for the boarder wall? The fact that the bill does not permit that much reinforces the Democrat position that we are not in a crisis.

But all of that is moot now.

There's more of a cap than there was, and "just take all the money from another agency over the objections of the Senate, the President, and most of your constituency" isn't a real answer.
