Capping the price of insulin and decriminalizing cannabis passed out of the House on straight party line Dem votes. I’d like to see way more of these pragmatic, clean, single issue bills passed out of the House. Even if there is no chance in the Senate. 4/1/2022 7:58:41 PM

It's good but the jaded part of me always wonders what the vote would be (or if they'd have one) if this had any chance in the senate 4/2/2022 12:25:02 AM

^I wouldn’t even call that jaded, it’s a realistic fact that some of the yes votes would flip or hesitate if these bills had a chance in the Senate. It’s an important question for Dem voters to ask who would be a let down in those situations, But it’s still good politics to pass these extremely popular bills (and keep the bills simple and clean). The strict party line votes are what’s really golden, as nothing paints the GOP as obstructionist assholes like voting in lockstep against popular bills. Make them do it every week from now till November.

I enjoyed AOC’s answer to the question, “How does cancelling student debt help us who paid their loans?”:
Quote : | " I've said it before and I'Il say it again: Not every program has to be for everybody. People with apartments pay for first time homeowner benefits. Young people pay for Medicare for our seniors. People who take public transit pay for car infrastructure. Maybe student loan forgiveness doesn't impact you. That doesn't make it bad. I am sure there are certainly other things that Student loan borrowers' taxes pay for. We can do good things and reject the scarcity mindset that says doing something good for someone else comes at the cost of something for ourselves. An example: If a person is blessed enough to be in a position to have paid off their loans, maybe they have a home now and benefitted from first time homeowners programs that people crushed by student loans help subsidize when they aren't able to buy a home because of student debt. It's all comes around. It's okay. We can support things we won't directly benefit from." |

It’s interesting the democrats get labeled the identity politics party, when identity politics is the core governing principle of the gop
And lawyerbrained centrism is the core governing principle of the democrats 5/3/2022 6:57:59 PM

You literally could not manufacture a worse tragedy than Sandyhook that combines multiple societal failures (rightwing extremism, poor mental health access, lax gun laws and regulation) and democrats were still unable to create any positive legislative outcomes from this
Worse yet the conspiracy loons that said this was fake got a president elected 5/3/2022 10:22:54 PM

Not sure where to put this, guess we need a "democracy credibility" thread.
Anyway this twitter thread and linked article are interesting but depressing

Not sure how not to feel totally hopeless about our ability to solve any of the critical broken pieces of our system much less actual world issues like climate change or health care. My state is pink and my district is deep red, so maybe I'll try for donations to toss up state races in other states. 5/5/2022 3:32:00 PM
