My xbox 360 is overheating/ fan failure (2 red lights).
Might just need to be cleaned.
Would anyone be willing to fix this? I can pay in cash, beer or giftcards (bestbuy, itunes, lowes, alpine ski center) 4/12/2011 11:45:28 AM |

There's actually a shop in Raleigh that repairs heat-related issues @ a pretty reasonable price. The guy does it with an infrared re-flow board as opposed to the home-brewed RROD/heat-related fixes that were popular a few months ago.
Name of the shop is Game Dynamics, it's in off Atlantic Avenue, close to Spring Forest if memory serves. 4/13/2011 4:59:40 PM |

No, no, no. You're supposed to have it turned on while you submerge it. That's the only way you'll get the solder to reflow. 4/13/2011 10:37:48 PM |

Please tell me you didn't try this. I mean, it should work and be safe in theory but you'd need a really clean vessel to put it in, and you have no way of verifying the actual clarity of the water you're using.
I'm 97% sure BL is pulling your leg - water is one of the best cooling methods I can think of, and you've got to get that sucker well above operating temperature to even have a chance of reflowing.4/14/2011 4:04:25 PM |

Or you could throw a brick through the window of your local Gamestop and steal a new 360 that way. Might as well grab a PS3 or 2 while you're there.
I know I catch a ton of shit for downloading a game every now and then, but how anyone could justify something like this is just beyond me.4/16/2011 9:21:41 AM |

"now and then" my ass. the difference is you are outright STEALING whereas I am pointing out a flaw in gamestop's evaluation process. nevermind that gamestop knows they take in their fair share of bad consoles and plans for this. microsoft and other companies pay them more than the trade value they give to you to take these broken consoles and refurbish them. 4/16/2011 9:45:38 AM |

I like how everyone on here just assumes that I download hundreds of games and do nothing all day but sit on my ass and laugh at how great it is to not have to pay for video games. I didn't even bother to plug my Xbox 360 in when I rearranged my living room 8 months ago. My Wii has been collecting dust in a box in a spare room for over 2 years and even with all the recent hacking progress on the PS3, I've still only downloaded 4 games, and the only one I bothered to play for more than a couple of minutes was Dragon Age 2. So yes, "now and then" is exactly the phrase I was looking for.
Unless there's something about me that you know that I'm unaware of.
Quote : | "the difference is you are outright STEALING" |
Technically, sure. It's stealing. You've really got me there. Thing is, I'm not removing money from anyone's pocket, because I was never going to buy it in the first place. I just don't care enough about gaming anymore to make that sort of investment.
You, on the other hand, are suggesting something that will remove money out of someone's pocket. No matter how you try to spin it or justify it to yourself, what you are suggesting is "outright STEALING" just the same as pirating, actually worse, IMO. Retail chains like Wal-mart plan a certain amount of loss due to theft into their budgets, so do you also think that means it's ok to go there and take what you want? Hey, they expect a certain amount of people to steal, so that's ok, right? Pointing out that Gamestop and Microsoft know there are scumbags that will lie and scam the system doesn't make it right to BE one of those scumbags. It still just makes you a scumbag.4/16/2011 10:07:46 AM |

the difference is gamestop has a lower revenue on a broken system but they still gain revenue. when gamestop buys a used console, just like an car dealer or private party, they take the risk that the used item may have a significantly shorter lifespan than retail and take that risk for lower buy-in. now what im suggesting may not be forthright and to a degree disingenuous, but you are never asked to testify to the condition of the console during the tradein process, but rather gamestop assesses this on their own. i've only pointed out a flaw in their xbox360 assessment.
your theft creates no revenue. i don't know what IP, object, etc I'm stealing.

So you own all current gen consoles but don't care about gaming? that doesn't make a lotta sense.

And I've only pointed out a flaw in their console security that allows you to hack them and download free games. Even in your best case argument, you're no better than I am. Actually, the fact that I'm not suggesting that other people break the law means I actually have some higher ground, morally speaking.
Quote : | "your theft creates no revenue." |
I doubt you'd believe me if I told you how many games I've actually purchased as a result of downloading a game illegally and trying them out. I caught so much shit for playing GTA4 before it came out, but what nobody knew is that I already had a copy pre-ordered and paid for while I was enjoying my week long preview. Yes, stealing a game I wasn't going to pay for is probably going to create no revenue (then again, it might if I like it enough to support the developer) but it's not losing any revenue either. On the other hand, what you're suggesting will end up costing somebody something no matter how you try to justify it. Yes, companies like Gamestop and Microsoft will write off the expenses as operating costs, but like I said, they also expect a certain amount of loss due to straight up theft. I guess that makes it ok to stuff 10 copies of Madden 11 down your pants every time you go in there, right?
Quote : | "So you own all current gen consoles but don't care about gaming? that doesn't make a lotta sense." |
I'm not really sure why you're all up in my ass with a fine toothed comb concerned about where or how I spend or don't spend my money.
For me, I get way more enjoyment these days about reading and trying out the various exploits that allow you to install homebrew and/or pirated games to your console than I do in actually playing the games. The only time I ever pull out my PSP or DS is when I read about a new hack that's came out that allows you to upgrade to a newer firmware or play a new set of games. For me hacking/pirating/homebrewing IS my hobby and gaming is really a side benefit of that at best.
I bought my PS3 to use strictly as a Blu-Ray player. It game with Metal Gear Solid which I played for 3 hours (OK, I played it for 15 minutes and watched the cut-scenes for 2:45) and promptly gave away to a friend. I also purchased LBP after it fell down to the $20 bin so I could see what the big deal was with it. I played it for probably an hour or so, couldn't figure out what the big deal was, and haven't touched it since. That was the extent of my interest in gaming on the PS3, and that was the total amount of money that I was interesting in putting back into the gaming community. I'm simply not that interested in gaming anymore. But then a couple of months ago, when they started with the hacks I was interested again. Not just because I was able to play all the games I missed out on, but because I'm truly interested in tinkering with stuff like that and seeing what I can get out of it. I downloaded GT5 because I used to enjoy some of the older ones but I lost interest after an hour or so because that game is so overwhelming. I don't have the time anymore to dedicate hours to finding just the right line in a corner or just the right set of tires that don't overheat until lap 6 instead of lap 3. It's just not fun for me like it used to be. But the satisfaction of knowing that I COULD play that game for free for as long as I want is worth it. Like I said, that's my hobby.
So do I try to justify piracy as being legal, that I'm somehow above the law? No. I don't. But do I think that I'm somehow hurting the industry for spending a couple of hours playing a game that I shouldn't technically have access to? Let's just say I manage to sleep at night just fine.]4/17/2011 11:53:56 AM |

nothing in the console's security allows you download free games, that is just stealing. executing games in the fashion you do is legal, as you've modified a device you own. executing pirated games is just executing material you stole.
if you're so fascinated in the process, backup a game you legally own.
Quote : | "Actually, the fact that I'm not suggesting that other people break the law means I actually have some higher ground, morally speaking." |
is this troll bait or are you that much of a self righteous hypocrite? you are a consistent advocate of piracy, which is theft any way you slice it, and then pipe up when someone else suggests some social engineering that's a daily common practice in the buying/selling of used goods?
Quote : | "I doubt you'd believe me if I told you how many games I've actually purchased as a result of downloading a game illegally and trying them out." |
that's what a demo is for. if the company didn't release one, that's their fault if they lost your business.
Quote : | "Yes, companies like Gamestop and Microsoft will write off the expenses as operating costs, but like I said, they also expect a certain amount of loss due to straight up theft. I guess that makes it ok to stuff 10 copies of Madden 11 down your pants every time you go in there, right?" |
are you really insinuating that because the I posted involves hustling physical merchandise, not theft mind you, and you're stealing over the wire that you have some sort high ground? you understand your downloading and then possible redistribution with a torrent is virtually identical to walking in a store and then stealing a copy? actually, it's more efficient theft of a game as your theft spawns more thefts whereas a shoplift is a finite scope?
you're a hypocrite that got called out. your argument is shit. give it a rest and get the fuck out. get a job and support the industry. lost revenue on resale of used games and piracy is going to move the industry to a cloud gaming model anyway.4/19/2011 9:10:09 AM |

screwing over a store is the same as screwing over a game manufacturer. if you are condoning tricking gamestop into buying a broken piece of equipment you don't have a lot of moral high ground to preach from.
its not just returning a broken piece of equipment and hoping they don't notice, its even worse because you are taking active steps to hide the damage before returning it. 4/19/2011 9:29:00 AM |

It's pretty obvious that either you don't know what the word advocate means or you're talking about your own fabricated version of me (again) in order to try and make a point. You're trying to pretend like I'm some champion for piracy. That every time I post, I'm trying to convert people to steal games like me because everyone should steal everything and pay for nothing. Simply put, I'm not the person that you seem to think I am. I don't recommend piracy to people, I don't help people with piracy, and despite what you're determined to think about me, I do believe in paying for things that I get use out of. You're trying to make this a black and white issue, and it's just not one.
On the other hand you most definitely advocated being dishonest about exchanging known bad hardware for good. But yet somehow still have the balls to claim moral ambiguity on both the act, and the fact that you recommend that others do it? Yeah, I'm thinking you might need to add hypocrisy to the list of words you don't know the meaning of.
