When the occasion calls for wearing a jacket vs. a suit...wtf does it mean? 4/17/2011 7:27:13 PM |

It means you either wear a jacket or a suit. Next question. 4/17/2011 7:28:25 PM |

No. Instructions were: "Just wear a jacket, not a suit" 4/17/2011 7:34:42 PM |

That's a lame way of describing the attire to an event.
Just play it safe and go with a tuxedo. You really can wear one anywhere. 4/17/2011 7:35:23 PM |

Quote : | "Since I have obviously taken an interest in your thread aside from venting about my own testimonial experiences going through job transitions (check out my Miami thread), I felt I would also share this with you because I have a vested interest in seeing my fellow Wolfpackers succeed.
If you want to get hired, you need to get a good suit based on the following - when you have these items in your wardrobe, any one of them will get you hired (this is a standard business professional wardrobe).
After you spend about 3 grand building an adequate professional wardrobe, you should be able to point at each of your basic suit patterns, explain what they are, and be able to envision an appropriate occasion for each, so you don't screw it up.
Any store that can either order these patterns for you or at least can speak the language is a place that you should get fitted and buy your suit from.
White pinstripes on blue background: uniform of most stockbrokers, bankers, lawyers, and politicians
Gray pinstripe on gray background: most popular alternative to standard pinstripe
Dark gray, almost black pinstriped fabric: ultra-conservative city variant that will probably get you hired and is a good choice for your job interview
Nailhead: classic pattern than comes in shades of gray or blue and gray.
Plain worsted: all colors - typically what you buy when you get your first suit
Chalk-striped pattern: most popular for double breasted and always mistakenly called pinstripe
Glen check: acceptable and classic, but may appear to make you look like a used car salesman
Get a darker charcoal plain worsted or almost black pinstriped pattern above dark charcoal, smile, and say smart things, and you'll probably get hired." |

Suit
Jacket
What's the question again? 4/17/2011 7:37:29 PM |
khcadwal All American 35165 Posts user info edit post |
put on a jacket with khakis. this also could imply that no tie is necessary (unless it says "coat and tie")
a suit is a suit. i really don't know how to break that down further. 4/17/2011 7:39:11 PM |

Just wear jeans, polo shirt, and a sports jacket. 4/17/2011 7:40:41 PM |
Ronny All American 30652 Posts user info edit post |
^Don't do that. That is hard to pull off and there is a HIGH probablity you'll look like a dick. Wear a shirt with buttons and tuck it in like an adult.
A jacket is just that... a jacket. A suit includes pants and they are typically worn together (to prevent them from fading differently because of the sun or washing).
Being told to wear just a jacket pretty much implies that you'll be fine with a sport coat/blazer, tie and nice pants.

I'd dress business casual, with a blazer. Keep a tie in the car just in case. 4/17/2011 7:41:02 PM |

blue blazer, white oxford shirt, khakis = Charleston tuxedo
Go with Charleston tuxedo FTW
And if you're dressed wrong just go home and post about it on TWW. 4/17/2011 7:46:05 PM |

^Timeless. Assuming everything fits and isn't garbage, you can't go wrong with that for casual occasions.
"Khakis" are fine, depending on the color of your jacket, shoes and belt.
Black jacket with what will presumably be a braided black belt and black square toes? Go fuck yourself.
Navy jacket with brown belt/shoes? Now you're talking.

you could also go with a seersucker pattern in the mix and rainbow sandals.... to be ironic because it's ironic that you're wearing sandals with your long pants and a blazer 4/17/2011 7:48:31 PM |

^^^Depends on the colors/shades of the pants and jacket. Possible.
I suggest everyone make themselves familiar with putthison.com if you have questions like this. Or are interested in not dressing like a dick.

You probably think you have this shit in your closet, but you don't. Go to Belk immediately.
Buy a Ralph Lauren sport coat. Don't buy any other brand.
Buy a Vineyard Vines long sleeve button-up shirt.
Buy a pair of Tommy Bahama pants.
Buy a pair of Clarks or Sperry shoes.
Leave Belk and go to Varsity Men's Wear at North Hills.
Buy a Smathers and Branson belt.
Buy a bow-tie, and not one of those clip, pre-tied ones. Those are for faggots.
Go to whatever it is wearing all of this and you are sure to phase and amaze. 4/17/2011 11:41:14 PM |
