Can't get on the network!

http://www.csmonitor.com/Innovation/Horizons/2011/0421/PlayStation-network-down-after-launch-of-several-new-games
Quote :
"The official Sony blog says that, far from a momentary network hiccup, users should expect the site to be down for as long as two days.

The service outage has locked users out from playing many Sony PlayStation games online, including four brand new releases. The outage coincides with the release of Mortal Kombat, Portal 2, SOCOM 4, and inFAMOUS 2's beta release. Users on Sony's blog page have been particularly vocal about not being able to play Mortal Kombat and the inFAMOUS 2 beta release. Dozens of other PlayStation games capable of network-play will be locked out for the next 24-48 hours.

What makes this more frustrating to users is the possibility that the network error is due to an intentional hack of Sony's network. The Sony blog message reportedly addressed "the possibility of targeted behavior by an outside party," but has since removed any reference to being hacked.

The hacker group Anonymous already took down several Sony sites earlier this year and received international attention after taking down the websites of Amazon, Visa, MasterCard, and PayPal in 2010. This time, however, Anonymous is not claiming responsibility.

The DDoS attacks, made famous after Anonymous' retaliation for the Wikileaks shutdown, were used again earlier this month on various Sony sites. The Low Orbit Ion Cannon (LOIC) was the sci-fi-sounding tool Anonymous used, but it did not bring the network down completely like it was brought down last night. Earlier this year, after Anonymous' hack, Sony engineers said the attacks were only "medium strength" and were more of an annoyance to engineers than anything else.

If the network was hacked, Sony is sure to be addressing the security holes over the next day or two to see that it doesn't happen again. Either way, PlayStation users are up in arms over the timing of this outage."

haha. people were fine with Anonymous fucking around with random websites. How big would the blowback be over this? even funnier to see that Sony is still running ads for those new games, touting the multi-player part of it a great deal. talk about bad marketing

ahahaha

I can imagine Katie sitting in the corner with the shakes, randomly spewing random phrases from Call of Duty and yelling at imaginary noobs.

Does suck that it happened on the weekend, I'm sure there were more than a few people who were productive members of society during the week and were looking forward to shooting some strangers over the weekend.

The annoying part for me was trying to get Netflix to work for my girlfriend who had come over to wait for me until I got home from work. But she was resourceful and had a book to read instead.

Some interesting speculation from reddit:

http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/gx6o4/im_a_moderator_over_at_psxscenecom_the_real/

Quote :
"Ok, I've seen a bunch of speculation of why people think PSN is down, and I thought I should just post what the community knows in comparison to what Sony is telling everyone. The truth is, there was a new CFW (custom firmware) released known as Rebug (http://rebug.me). It essentially turns a retail console into a dev console (not fully, but gives you a lot of the same options that usually dev's only have access to). Anyway, this new CFW was quickly figured out to give CFW users access to the PSN network again via the dev networks. With a little manipulation of the URL's through a proxy server you could get your hacked console back online. Not that big of a deal, right? Well, it also turns out that some people over at NGU found out that you could provide fake CC# info and the authenticity of the information was never checked as you were on Sony's private developer PSN network (essentially a network that Sony trusted). What happened next was extreme piracy of PSN content. Sony realizing the issue here shut down the network. Now, before you go freaking out about the latest information posted about Kotaku, no ones personal information was accessible via this hack. Not to say they couldn't get it, but no one is admitting to it being available. Anyway, that's the real reason for the PSN downtime. Sony is now rebuilding all of it's PSN servers to be more secure and (hopefully) make sure the CFW users cannot get online anymore.

Edit: To those of you saying that this is speculation, you are correct. But, it is speculation based on a lot of facts and the outcome seems to make the most sense.

1. Rebug was released on 3/31/11.
2. First guides of how to use the dev network to get back on COD games on 4/3/11.
3. Word of "shady" sites finding a way to pirate PSN content via the dev networks on 4/7/11 (basing this on posts I had to delete on the website).
4. PSN goes down on 4/20/11

Now, you can believe Sony's PR team which has kept you completely in the dark, or you can see the list of events above and come to your own conclusion. Now, this isn't the first time Sony has fought back against the PS3 modders from getting on PSN. A couple of months ago we had a utility called f*ckPSN that changed the necessary header information that was being sent to Sony to allow modified consoles back online. We were able to use it for about a month. Then came the new TOS, the mass e-mail to PS3 customers, and software update 3.56 and 3.60. So, once again, yes this is all speculation, but it is speculation based on previous actions and known facts."

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/04/psn-update-sony-isnt-sure-your-credit-card-data-is-safe.ars

Quote :
"Sony isn't saying much about the PlayStation Network outage, but a new update doesn't give us much hope for a speedy resolution. Even worse is the fact the company doesn't seem to know if your financial data has been compromised. Sleep tight!

Satoshi Fukuoka, a spokesman for Sony Computer Entertainment in Tokyo, spoke with PCWorld and claimed the company "has not yet determined if the personal information or credit card numbers of users have been compromised, but that Sony would promptly inform users if it found that was the case."

Luckily, Sony's Patrick Seybold has yet another update to let us all know that Sony doesn't have much of a clue about when this mess will get fixed. "Unfortunately, I don't have an update or timeframe to share at this point in time," he wrote. "As we previously noted, this is a time intensive process and we're working to get them back online quickly. Will keep you updated with information as it becomes available. We once again thank you for your patience."

Since you can't play your games online, why not use that extra time to double-check your credit and debit card records?"

Maybe for the plus members since they are paying for extra features through PSN. Otherwise, I don't really feel like they owe us anything. I mean, it sucks that we haven't been able to play online for a week, but I'd rather it'd be the case than having a lot of personal information easily available. It's still Sony's fault but I can't imagine they'd offer any kind of compensation.

How can you?

It asks me to sign in PSN...I obviously can't...then it says you cannot use Netflix without signing in.

I'm kinda bummed and frustrated by this, but on the plus side I've been too busy in the past week to do any online game playing. However one thing that really sucks is that I had all my GT5 B-Spec drivers shared for online play...thus they're all stuck online and inaccessible for me to use them in the game offline

disagree on the first part. the worst case scenario outlined in the 2nd part is probably true. the 3rd part, i agree on.

just b/c i dont pay for Plus doesnt mean i'm not entitled to access to PSN and that there isnt some value associated with this. The PSN is an understood part of the purchase of a PS3 and any PS3 games. If you purchase a COD, for instance, you are essentially purchasing because of hte existence of PSN. Nobody buys that game solely for the single player.

They have known for a week and are just NOW telling us our personal info was compromised? And we should put fraud alerts on our credit? Wow. Im a bit of a Sony homer, but this shit pisses me off.

I can understand having your shit hacked, there are some pretty smart people out there...but not telling people so they can protect themselves is inexcusable.
