I have serious hate for UPS currently. For my wedding my grandfather hand carved us a table. He decided to ship it rather than fly it on the plane with him. He brought it to the UPS Store and asked them package it. When out arrived all of the legs had snapped from the base. The assholes just threw it in a box with some packing peanuts. Nothing saying fragile, do not stack, no padding, nothing. My grandfather was so upset when he found out. He's been working on the table for months Thankfully he had insurance on it but initially when we filed a claim they tried to deny it based on "insufficient packaging." No shit, assholes. My dad went ballistic on them and they changed their tune then

until you have worked in a UPS shipping plant you do not know how badly packages get treated. Its all about speed. Fragile just means treat the package worse when you are having a bad day

I worked for UPS for a little while, and I'll say this: putting "fragile" all over your package does precisely nothing. It will not get any special treatment, so just pack the HELL out of it (talking bombproof) or don't ship it if it's that important. Nobody there makes it a point to mistreat packages, in fact most employees do their best within reason to handle it properly, but it's the nature of the beast. Millions of packages are crammed through the system every day and they will get stuffed, stacked, squished and abused in every way imaginable. I would presume the same for any major courier service.

I worked for UPS for 5 years, and there are three pretty reliable tests for whether your package is packed well enough to ship.

Hold it over your head, and drop it to the ground at the most awkward angle possible (usually a corner of the box).

Place it on the ground, and stand/stomp on it.

Try to rip it open at all seams with your bare hands.

If it passes, it is ready to ship.

I worked as a mover for two summers in high school and we had to take a packing class. I packed an entire kitchen(stray shit that has been accumulated over the years, not personal property)as best I could, when I reported that I was done the supervisor took my box over to a forklift and proceeded to lifted it 22 feet in the air and shake it until it fell. I then had to unpack and separate all the broken stuff. 60% survival rate was the goal, and I barley passed. I was actually probably closer to 55, but they needed some people.

I would never do that to someone's package. I'm saying that's what you need to do on your own if you're going to ship something that is breakable. Or, at least, try to figure out whether your box is good enough for that.

Despite working there, I won't hesitate to use UPS. Every single day of work I saw a pile of 20-100 mangled boxes, broken valuables, and contents we couldn't even match with a particular box. It was hard to see, and made me not want to use UPS ever on my own. But then I did the math. With 100,000 packages unloaded, sorted, and re-loaded in new trailers inside of 4 hours, that's really an impressively low amount of problems. Even when that process is repeated at 5 other facilities before your destination, you still have a more than 99% chance of getting your box on time and in decent shape.

It's not malicious on the part of UPS or its employees. It's just a fact of life. UPS unloaders and sorters will typically handle a different package every 2-3 seconds. Writing "fragile" on a box isn't effective - not because it will be ignored or laughed at, but because it won't even be noticed.

I went to the big UPS distribution place over around Atlantic Ave.

Man, it was depressing. No TV or decent music (outside of an employee's personal radio) or coffee or places to sit or even stuff to look at on the walls. Just a bunch of people standing around waiting on packages, and one woman behind the counter tryna keep tensions at a minimum.

They don't want you to wait at the place, but the location is terrible for anything else. It's a Latino shopping center, which is fine, but it means most people can't duck out to take care of shopping or grab a bite while their missing package is being located. You're just stuck there.

Ordered some curtain stuff from JC Penny. UPS delivers one of two packages on Friday. Call JC Penny to find out where the other package is. They say UPS has it. Call UPS and they can't tell me shit. Then I get an email from them today saying the package had been damaged and was being investigated. Why the hell didn't they put that in their system Friday when they scanned it So now I'm on hold with JC Penny to get a refund on the missing hardware. They have the worst hold music I've heard in a long time lol.

I used to work for UPS and the above comments are correct.

If you can hold a package in one hand assume it will be thrown like a football.

If its light but takes up two hands assume it will be thrown two handed.

If its heavy and cumbersome assume it will be dropped onto a hard floor from chest level at least.

Pretty much your safest bet is a package that requires two hands and is moderately heavy those typically end up getting stacked in the middle and not dropped or thrown.

As others have said not everyone is like that at UPS but you never know which type of person is gonna handle your package so best to play it safe.

I just don't like my UPS driver. I have five or six stairs leading to my front porch and he throws the packages up there instead of walking up them. Not what you want to see when you order a external HDD from Newegg. Also, if a package is heavy he just stacks it up right in front of the garage door. That's ok I guess if I pull into the driveway and see it, but it's not cool when I open the garage door, get in my car, start backing up, and find out there is a surprise right behind my car. My 4Runner only has about 4" of clearance between the garage door and the tailgate, so you're not going to see something stacked right behind the truck unless you look before you get in.

It's also just kind of not cool when you're sitting in the living room and you hear something smack your front door (from him throwing it). It has made me jump up in "WTF WAS THAT" mode a couple times and then I see his truck parked in the street.

Yeah not everyone is like that, but when you are working three trucks and a shipment of 30 computers just backed up your low volume truck and your high volume truck is in the typical perpetually slammed state even the best of them have to start slinging boxes to get caught up.

Drivers are specifically told to throw the packages up the steps. It saves time and their knees.

Oh and Cass, if your package made it through the UPS hubs then throwing it onto your porch isn't likely to be a problem.

Yep! I load the Fedex truck at my job. The boxes that say "This Side Up" often go on the truck laying on their side, or upside down. Even when you try to keep them sitting up, they often tip over on the belt, or when they fall off the end of the belt. Heavy things smash lighter things even when we try to avoid these problems.

hehe, when I was working down in Florida, my boss swore that his fedex driver hated him because he ships and received big heavy boxes worth of camera equipment since he does on location work and its cheaper to just fedex all your shit before the dates. After I started assisting and working with the fedex dude, who btw is black, and helped him with loading a few times he stopped being a dick to my boss and actually came on time for a change. He actually smiles after a few weeks.

My boss is convinced I gave him some special brownies for him to like me or something. lol

^Our Fedex drivers have quit coming on time, but I think part of that has to do with all of the new guys they hired who are still learning how to do their job. It used to be that they would yell at us to hurry up and get their before it was time to leave. Now 5:00 pm pickup means somewhere between 5:00 pm and 6:30 pm.
