I figured there should be one of these. Why hasn't there been? Going with all things record playing, etc etc etc

Anyway, today I won a vinyl district contest for a free LP today and got pretty excited. Especially since I wasted some dough on a show I didnt go to yesterday.

Looking at a Victrola this weekend, also.

Judge. Me. PS I have like 50 blues 78s. Not good for Crumb standards, but still...

last year they had an awesome victrola at father & son that had the horn inside the cabinet

it was sold before I got there, though

score of the month was original geffen pressings of elastica s/t and nirvana unplugged on white when i was in baltimore

also, i heard some guy went backstage at phosphorescent and asked them if they knew any covers. they said no, so he threw down $300 and told them to play whatever else they knew

I am pretty sure I'll need to pick up Unplugged on vinyl at some point, but I'm not the type of person to go crazy on collector's copies of LPs. I DO wish I had bought more stuff on vinyl in the 90s that was current. I have a few decent ones I guess...Yield, Mellow Gold, Odelay, some others in there...

Also, when I find them, I have an assload of 7"s from the 90s, including some Superchunk stuff that I'm gonna be selling off. Will let yall know when and if I find them and that happens...

pretty much anything original from the '90s or early '00s on vinyl, especially mainstream releases, is worth something. i bought a new copy of RATM "battle of los angeles" when it came out, and i recently sold it for almost $60 without the slipmat it came packaged with. a mediocre album for sure, but there were only a few thousand vinyl copies made.

With the exception of the Odelay album that I picked up at Schoolkids in 1998, EVERY current 90s release I had to specially order. I just wish I had done that more, because the price difference was about what it is today. Now they make it hard not to buy records, because you get the free download, and who the hell wants a CD?

with the invention of downloadable content, the CD is the worst of both worlds. it's less portable than an ipod, and the artwork is smaller/shittier than an LP.

where abouts? i used to live about 2 blocks from M-Theory records in Mission Hills, but have since moved up near Del Mar. Lou's Records up in Encinitas is pretty good as well (although I liked M-Theory more).

yes i do

and how things come full circle, last friday night that i dipped on the phosphorescent show, it was at one of those places that's split into two venues, with a bigger area, then a smaller studio/bar area.... phosphorescent played the bar, echo played the larger room at the same time.

echo and the bunnymen are kinda dreadful live, or were at all points west a few years ago.

stopped by m-theory today. i found a copy of beck's "sexx laws" single. that's about as close as i'll ever get to that album unless it's ever reissued

those were on sale at schoolkids for 99 cents back in the day, i bought three and always get them whenever i see them now

^ yep. the clear one. it was only 7 bucks. i've seen it going for $25 on ebay. this place also had a used copy of siamese dream for $30 even though someone probably bought it at best buy or off amazon and later traded it in. it was just a black vinyl instead of one of the original color pressings, but i wasn't sure if there was any way to distinguish between one of the early repressings that also happen to be black or if it was a 2007 reissue

There was also a goblin cock record that i regret not buying for the sheer novelty of it

^my copy of siamese dream is on like peachy colored vinyl, picked it up a number of years back.

also, the rob crow stuff (like goblin cock and solo) is a lot more abundant since they're local. zach lives in little italy (or at least he did a few years ago). they played a free show up at Lou's records when Autumn of the Seraphs came out and did a signing and he mentioned that in passing. judging by the rob crow album cover, he lives in like north park or something.

anyways, i saw goblin cock at a little place when that album came out. fun show. i've also randomly seen rob crow in attendance at other shows.

For anybody that cares, Insound has a decent sale on newer releases going on. Some of the prices are whack, but others are awesome. If you don't have that Tame Impala record yet, that's probably the best you're gonna do...

it varies. sometimes you'll see a record sell for $20 and then a week later the same thing will sell for $100. condition counts, of course, as does location, but i can't wrap my head around all the price jumps. i'd guess that 2/3 of the people who use that site are euros, too. glad they pay shipping.

who knew that boring-ass mineral record would go for so much? i think i sold mine in the early 2000s for $40-50, though. yikes!

Just picked up the Fat Boys' first album in awesome condition, a Megapuss record, and Gang Gang Dance's latest (I decided I liked it enough to spend 18 bucks on, apparently).

4AD has been killin' it lately. And by 'it', I mean my damned wallet.

At the rate of my buying/winning records, I will have over 1000 on the year. Just won 4 new titles from various contests, and it includes a Devo re-issue.

No lie...
I found like four crates of country and oldies records on the side of the road on Kaplan Dr. one day. I dug through them and pulled out all the Willie Nelson, Hank Sr, Waylon Jennings, Patsy Cline, etc. and then I took all the rest to that indoor flea market on Capital Blvd where Mike gave me an early pressing of the S/T Clash record for them. That record is still in heavy rotation at my house to this day.

No lie for real.

Oh yeah, another No Lie story...
One day I was driving down Kaplan Dr. and there was a sweet vintage Yamaha stereo system on the side of the road. I picked it up, sold the receiver and tape deck for like $100 on eBay, and kept the record player for myself. I had to spend $35 on a new cartridge, but it sounds pretty good and has been solid for at least 6 years now. It's a silver "Yamaha Natural Sound" turntable with wood grain vinyl on the base.

Kaplan Dr. has been good to me.

I didn't find out until this year that his name is Michael Mann, not Michael Spikel. He picked "Spikel" because it rhymes.

^That dude once brought in a copy of his band's CD to give to our manager here at Schoolkids, then signed it, gave it to him, and said with a straight face, "that'll be $10." Ric didn't know what to do, so he gave him $10.

Apparently he's an amazing funk drummer. He may listen to mostly silly '80s stuff like ConFunkShun in his shop, but if you get him going about classic '60s/'70s funk you can really get a lesson.

Still a weird guy.

that dude sucks. some of my friends love him, but that's just because he sells tons of questionable electro/rap/electro-pop-rap singles.

Occasionally he's got a nice soul record on the wall you can talk him down on.

Can't argue with King Floyd for $6.

That's awesome.

I go by there every once in a while just to see what classic punk rock and metal stuff he has. He seems like a good guy to me, but he has a sad story about losing his son. I'm sure that's something you never fully recover from.

King Floyd for 6. I'm down.

I say this while considering a Chad and Jeremy original for 15. Not the greatest price, but Summer Song on a record without having to dig is probably 15 worthy...
