Head this over the radio as it happened. Comms went pretty much like this:
Officer: Raleigh send me a check in, got one fighting with me. Raleigh Dispatcher: Units enroute advise. (Several RPD Units respond). Supervisor: Raleigh show me checking in and on scene. (Couple mins later) Supervisor: Raleigh go ahead and send EMS 10-40 (no lights/siren). Have a 30 something year old male conscious and breathing cuts to forehead. He hurt his head by falling down. No further units needed on scene. 5/15/2011 7:22:39 PM |

I will see if I can't dig up the actual radio transmission audio. Did not know the back story at the time only knew that the officer had someone resisting arrest. 5/15/2011 7:23:37 PM |

^ Nah, Radioreference.com archives all public safety streamed audio and that archive is available to subscribers. You can go back and listen (or download in mp3 format) to past archived audio hour by hour.

I met a cabby who had a police scanner running in his car the whole time.
I asked him if he did that for ease of access in potentially violating Federal law in exchange for more rapid contact with the police in the event he was ever in trouble in the cab. I mean, even though he'd be plain voice over the radio at least help would be on the way even though he broke the law by creating an unauthorized transmission on their net.
He said, "Nah, it's so people will think I am a cop."
And then I realized he was just more delusional than smart. Still tipped him. 5/15/2011 7:31:54 PM |

^ A scanner is receive only without the ability to transmit. A Transceiver is able to transmit & receive.
Radio on the left is a Motorola XTS 5000 transceiver which is programmed (and authorized) to transmit and receive on the Wake County Radio System. It costs about $3500-4000 with the options it has flashed into the firmware.
The Scanner on the right is a receive only Uniden BCD396XT. It costs about $500 new.
One other note is that there are safeguards in place that prevent just anyone from being able to purchase a Moto XTS 5K and being able to program it to monitor and transmit on the Wake County System.
However you can purchase a receive only scanner and listen all day and night.
My guess is that the cabbie had a receive only scanner. 5/15/2011 7:45:28 PM |

^ the ones with spring loaded locking bales - give me a challenge
^ ^ I used scanner lightly in the context of the story, fully aware that it would require separate capability than what some models offer to broadcast on the net 5/15/2011 8:48:22 PM |

This thread reminds me of..
Quote : | "AUGUSTA, Ga. - A U.S. Marine reservist collecting toys for children was stabbed when he helped stop a suspected shoplifter in eastern Georgia.
Best Buy sales manager Orvin Smith told The Augusta Chronicle that man was seen on surveillance cameras Friday putting a laptop under his jacket at the Augusta store.
When confronted, the man became irate, knocked down an employee, pulled a knife and ran toward the door. Outside were four Marines collecting toys for the service branch's "Toys For Tots" program.
Smith said the Marines stopped the man, but he stabbed one of them, Cpl. Phillip Duggan, in the back. The cut did not appear to be severe.
The suspect was transported to the local hospital with two broken arms, a broken leg, broken ribs, assorted lacerations and bruises he obtained when he fell trying to run after stabbing the Marine.
The suspect, whose name was not released, was held until police arrived. The Richmond County Sheriff's office said it is investigating. " |
