Quote : | "LONDON (Reuters) – Scientists have found that a gene linked to diabetes and cholesterol is a "master switch" that controls other genes found in fat in the body, and say it should help in the search for treatments for obesity-related diseases.
In a study published in the journal Nature Genetics, the British researchers said that since fat plays an important role in peoples' susceptibility to metabolic diseases like obesity, heart disease and diabetes, the regulating gene could be target for drugs to treat such illnesses.
"This is the first major study that shows how small changes in one master regulator gene can cause a cascade of other metabolic effects in other genes," said Tim Spector of King's College London, who led the study.

as for emce, how the hell is HE criticizing me for being unfunny, when the vast majority of his posts are him hitting on twwers, both males and females (and making graphic 'funny' sexual comments about twwers)? yeah, it was funny the first 3 times, but not 60,000 times.
p.s. i would rather be without a sense of humor than be a nasty hypersexualized wannabe tuff guy.

Geez. Weight gain is a pretty easy concept for the VAST majority of healthy people. You take in more calories than you use.
Also I dont think you can pin the explosion on obesity on one gene. I think diet and lifestyle are the driving factors. However, altering the way you body handles food might keep the weight off, but it still allows one to continue the unhealthy lifestyle without the negative feedback, which has positive and negative aspects.5/16/2011 10:21:34 AM |

I don't think anyone here, including the scientists, is blaming obesity on one gene. Well, the obesity explosion that is (because there are disorders where obesity is always a factor due to a single gene change). Most of the obesity research I've seen always states it's a multifactorial issue (genes + environment).

^I dont think genetics is as big of an issue. Obesity worldwide has doubled in less than 30 years. I think you would be hard press to find a serious genetic link to account for that.
I think it has to do more with food production/processed foods and exercise myself.
And so does WHO
http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs311/en/index.html
Also, this links directly with the explosion of diabetes. 5/16/2011 11:36:09 AM |

They actually have found links between being obese and genetics as there are numerous alleles that have been found to give someone that genetic predisposition. However, I have yet to hear someone blame the explosion on generics and use it for blame. Many of the studies I have seen focus more on how this information can help people avoid obesity and want to create a more personalized form of care for different people. Obviousy exercise and the right diet are important (except in some single gene disorders), but helping someone understand how their genetic make-up will affect how they respond to said exercise and diet regimens has a lot of value. 5/16/2011 2:48:05 PM |

I don't think there is a gene "switch." Its not a damn on/off button that can be pushed whenever.
Read this paper: I think this may be what you are referring to. I do similar studies in non human primates where animals are fed a soy-based protein diet vs a casein-based protein diet, and the epigenetic effects are currently being studied.
http://journals.cambridge.org/download.php?file=%2FBJN%2FBJN97_06%2FS0007114507682920a.pdf&code=5179d5e9262e5e036ca4bcf617ba24df
Basically, if you don't want to read the paper: If your mom is pregnant with you and doesn't eat the right foods, you have an increased chance of becoming obese after your born. 5/16/2011 3:05:54 PM |

It's not saying a switch that turns on/off obesity... It controls whether or not other genes can work that encode for other metabolic cascades

This same study was referenced in one of those pop science/nutrition books -- The Veganist. My sister read this and had one of those life changing revelations, and she's become a proselytizing vegan now after being a normal omnivore her whole life.
I skimmed some of the book, and while I think it makes some valid points (obvious stuff: processed foods are bad for you, eat more fruits and vegetables), a lot of what's in there is absolute bullshit in my opinion.
So perhaps the The China Study is valid, but being misrepresented by the authors, or the The China Study is bullshit in and of itself.
Anyone read the book I'm talking about? To me it would sit on a bookshelf right next to The Secret, and Cures They Don't Want You to Know About.5/17/2011 9:57:23 AM |
