Would you take a ride with a stranger?


I was flying from RDU to Boston, through LaGuardia, when my connecting flight was cancelled. I was able to just rent a car and drive the rest of the way with my coworker. But while we were talking to ticket agents, two girls (aged 22 and 24) came up with the same problem. When we started talking about driving instead of staying the night, they immediately asked if they could come with. Note that the girls didn't know each other, and didn't know us at all.


- Would you have asked a stranger if you could ride with them?
- Would you have allowed a stranger to ride with you?

Doesn't seem weird to me. I wouldn't ask to ride for free, but I'd ask if they want someone else to split the costs. Since they're on business they can probably expense it so I'd toss them some cash that they could spend at the bar.

^ I don't think you really hate the fact that you're that shallow.

And attractiveness would also play a role in my decision. Not saying I wouldn't give a ride to an unattractive girl in this instance...but I'd be more likely to give the ride if the girl were hot and I'd be less likely to give a ride if she were extremely obese and might make me uncomfortable for the duration of the ride.

ive done this before

once from from peoria, il to chicago and another time manhattan, ks to kansas city (each of them being approx 2 hours drive apart)

the first time i was coming back from my job interview with caterpillar and the flight was cancelled. another candidate was on my same flight to chicago so we were both stuck. a business traveler was also on our flight and said he was renting a car to chicago, me and the other college kid looked at each other and mutually understood that we were going to ask if we could ride with. it ended up being a lot of fun. the business traveler guy was cool and the other college kid was cool too.

the second time, i gave a stranger a ride to kansas city. flight was cancelled but we could make the connection in kansas city if we left at that second. he got dropped off and didn't have a car, i had mine parked. he kind of asked if he could hitch a ride and i felt comfortable helping him out. turns out he was a professor at KSU and pretty cool.

i ended up making my connecting flights both times and i never had any problems. but i also trusted my gut and if a weird person was going to be in the car i would have backed out. i also called my parents both times and told them what was going on. on the chicago one i joked that there was no time to kill me and dump the body because the connection was too close (lol)

funny enough, i came to find out how often the flights out of manhattan, ks & peoria, il got cancelled and eventually made crazy contingency plans because you could count on it at least 50% of the time

I would definitely do it but would feel more comfortable if the girl was attractive, or at least looked friendly.

I don't think I would ever ask because I am a guy and I think that might creep out a woman.

I, too, feel shallow that the attractiveness of the female would play a large part in whether or not I would allow them to join me. I know it's just primitive instincts or whatever and I'd like to think I was more civilized than that, but I just know if it was a fat sweaty mouthbreather I'd say no.

My mom did this recently with no problems. Her flight was cancelled and there was a woman about my age in line behind her at the rental car place (had been on the same flight). They started chatting and decided it was stupid to rent separate cars to go to the same town 4 hours away.

So I was with a co worker. I'm 29 and he is low 30s. The girls were attractive (one was 22 and just out of college, damn cute) and younger than us but that honestly didn't make the decision.

They asked as my co worker and I started talking logistics. We said yes. Since it was for work, the rental and gas was expensed so it was free to them.

I'd probably do it again. I'm not sure if I'd have asked though in their shoes.
